How many of you know that Cricinfo started as a Usenet/IRC bot?

How did they build the brand? The critical mass of userbase? How did they manage to generate user generated content (i.e. UGC)?

Did you know that the site was a volunteer run organization till 1999 and was dependent on contributions from fans?

There are many firsts to the site and of course, a lot of story needs to be asked and told.

So, here is your chance to shoot your questions (in the comment section) to Dr. Badri Sheshadri, cofounder of Cricinfo.

How about the story of acquisition by ESPN? How it started, time it took, and closure… Did they engineer it or did it happen on its own?

    Dear Badri,

In spite of its success, why there is no numbers (in terms of dollars) came out in public when Wisden initially acquired Cricinfo?

    Dr.,

Usenet/IRC bot is for hard core techies who hardly spend watching TV [forget about 21th century techies ctrl-c + ctrl-v. you strated before 2000 yr].

Why did you created group instead of www site. [ chetana group followed the same strategy using Y! group ]

What made you to create in that hard core group. How was the initial response.

How did you manage to retains those followers.

    Badri,

I’ll start with congratulating you for an awesome effort with Cricinfo.

I am looking to know more about the things that you didn’t do rather than what you did.
Can you share top 3 things/approaches that you thought of and decided against taking, specially when deciding what services you are going to offer through Cricinfo, and why you decided against those?

    Dear Badri,

Congratulations on making your website a success. I am a huge cricket fan and looking for opportunities to start a venture in cricket. Can you please suggest some business ideas which you think might work?

    Thanks.

I have an excellent business model that will realistically bring paradigm shift in the Cricketing world. Many big names participating.

Let me know what you are looking for and also if you could bring in the funds?

      Ady
