Okhey, this post is a little off-beat. Women’s Reservation Bill giving 33 percent representation to women in parliament and state assemblies has been passed in the Rajya Sabha with 186 ayes & 1 noes about an hour ago! Yet another historic & welcome development in the Indian politics as women really need empowerment in modern day scenario. Besides if reservation is up on cards for the historically suppressed class of society, then women are the most deserving group for such an initiative.
Of course this bill @Rajya Sabha was not passed without drama & walk-outs. But what is more important is to visualize the impact of such a step on the woman-workforce in future. I will quote from one of my previous post last October on Gharkamai where the first paragraph read as following:
In our society, it is so acceptable and understandable to see a highly educated woman settling down as a home-maker raising kids, watching TV soaps, cooking great food etc. Scarcely does one (read men) understand what it feels like when a girl who was taught to become a professional since childhood is forced to become a housewife. Sshhh, and does anyone even know the loss that the country incurs by depriving such a large population of skilled manpower from work.
This is totally an awesome decision @ Parliament and Pluggd.in wishes all women for the new future.

Please have more women authors. 33% atleast!!
+ 100
This is really get news and open the doors of lots of womens who had dream of changing our country. I must say the fight was really for the good and this had to happen one day. We have seen that Women had contributed equally in all the fields and have achieved what ever they wanted. 3 cheers for this news..

hi
shreya
if gov really want to upgrade d status women, it is not a wright way by endowing them 33% reservation in parliament but they should make more women aware 4 their fundamental rights.
more and more women should b made litrate.
if such type of reservation is given to the women then only high ststus women will take the advatage of this.
thank you
Arvind: You cannot be serious when you write: “Yet another historic & welcome development in the Indian politics as women really need empowerment in modern day scenario.”
The Bill is anything BUT a “historic and welcome development”.
It is almost always a bad (and most likely ineffective) idea to “empower” citizens by “law” instead of by good governance and policies.
It makes a mockery of all anti-discrimination laws passed in the last few decades…
Quotas – of any kind – are not the way to resolve imbalances…
The (misguided) spirit of the Bill is almost certain to be subverted by what Kanchan Gupta memorably calls the “Biwi-Beti-Bahu-Behen-Bhanji” factor.
There are (numerous) other ways of empowering women…Let us focus on those…For starters, how about making sure they can walk the streets safely? or look a policeman in the eye?
This is a huried comment…Kindly ignore typos etc.
+1 I agree with your comment.
And did u notice how leaders of “dalit” call this bill “anti-dalit”. Why does it lower the “beneficiary” to see policy-cake getting shared on to the new group??? Any reasons that I am unable to understand huh?
Cheers,
Arvind
I totally agree..reserving seats is not really going to empower women. Most of the women contesting from the reserved constituencies will be doing so in proxy for husbands or fathers (case in point Rabri Devi…).
Oh and just in case anyone is tempted to paint me as a “misogynist”, here is the link to a whole category of posts on “Women in Hinduism and India” on my blog.
P.S. I know this could also be interpreted as a shameless plug…I will take the chance.
Thanks
But since quotas for everyone else are in-vogue, this decision is very welcome. I can bet on that!
Cheers,
Arvind
Great Move ahead

WOmen reservation at IITs and IIMs
Having spent 4 + 2 productive years at the above institutions, I am a big proponent of women reservations at IITs. Thats what is going to save this country. Getting more of them to learn something than getting more of them into the parliament.
If this was a twitter post there wudve been a hundred acks already
Women reservation @IITs and IIMs has more to do with increasing the ratio of non-males and males
Joke aside, this is a brave move and hopefully we will see better governance.

A goodhousewife can raise great leaders ..
hence , I think.. The term mentioned in your paragraph about housewife , raising kids and secondary importance given to the housewife job .. wasnt correct ..though it is equally correct that she can manage work + home ..
If you refer history ,for many greate leaders the source of their inspiration were there mothers ..
Thats really a good news. Finally it is passed.
Toon on the same.. http://caricaturehome.blogspot.com/2010/03/women-empowerment-bill.html
Nice
Brilliant!!!!!! Pure Brilliant!!!!!! Women no offence guys but do bring about a more organized way of living and im a hundred percent sure this will do nothing but good for the nation! PURE AWESOME!!!!!!!
As per my opinion, Woman reservation and other reservation should be eliminated and make a fair competition between everyone. Normal men and boy are facing so many difficulty because of that.
Woman Reservation :- 50 % Currently in Maharashtra
Lower cast reservation :- 30 %
Means normal people are only a follower.
Please eliminate reservation policy and make a fair competition between men, woman and cast.
i think it is good idea to show women power in front of their society, as we all know that, Bihar was the first state to reserve the 50% seats in panchyats for women. i have seen that, it has emerged good idea to help for women condition in our country
it was introduced in 1995, but due to some political problem,it was not passed on that time, but, now it has passed, then, i am feeling so much pleasure that i can not explain by word, according to condition of indian women, it should have done early, however, it has passed now, it will get improved condition of indian women in coming time.
