[...] Using complex language to describe things when simple language will suffice is often times an indication of ignorance and insecurity. The entrepreneur hopes to hide his ignorance by taking refuge in obfuscation. Using complex language also gives a sense of false superiority as it bestows a cloak of importance on the user. It indicates a failure to think clearly and almost shows contempt for one’s audience” -Read Sanjay Anandaram’s article on What Business Am I in - How many Startups can answer this?
I agree completely. We've all seen or heard of "buzzword compliance".
But the examples of LinkedIn, YouTube and Facebook aren't any better! They follow what I Like to call "Market Speak".
If you apply Facebook's tagline to Twitter or Pownce or any other social network it will still fit. It's nothing but a fancy tagline that doesn't really say much about the company.

Compare this to the description of37 Signal's Basecamp: "Get Project Done. Basecamp is the smarter, easier, more elegant way to get your internal and client projects done". Clean, simple and to the point.

Sorry for diverging on to design, but considering how your company's message acts as a communication to your audience, it is important what you put into it.

Well, having a small enough unique description is not alone in ensuring victory for the startup. It is useful in the beginning, to articulate the goal of the startup !
