Believe it or not, gupshup's problem was the enormous funding they received from a VC who did not understand or appreciate twitter or shall I say Internet business .(same old problems with these dork of Indian VCs ...)
The funding just forced gupshup guys to focus on non existent revenues rather than building a business to sell by increasing user base ..

Imagine what a great opportunity it would have been if they would have chosen to do later especially when facebook / google are trying hard to acquire twitter .. gupshup would have been a very good buy .. but let's not worry abt spilt milk .. now gupshup, you can choose to sell now in the hope of salvaging something at least or wait for the eminent slow death ..

BTW Helion is doing a great job in finding duds firstly NgPay, now Gupshup .. way to go ..:) (is it any better than investing in Guruji / Minglebox?). These a#$ h#l#s will later claim that there are no good companies in India worth investing ..

short and crisp description. Like you said, the mainstream media has given the boost -- plus the usability of twitter during crisis (mumbai blasts) have also given the surge.
Any idea anyone why mobile updates functionality is no more there?
