NComputing to power 5000 schools in AP

Low cost PC provider, NComputing has partnered with AP government to provide computing access to 5,000-school educational computing initiative (provide computing access to 1.8 million children).

“Today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications use only a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. NComputing taps this unused capacity so that it can be simultaneously shared by multiple users. Each user’s monitor, keyboard, and mouse connect to the shared PC through a small and very durable NComputing access device. And these devices are everything you want them to be: rugged, durable, and easy to deploy and maintain (because the device itself has no CPU, memory or moving parts like a PC), so you can:

  • Cut PC acquisition costs by 60%
  • Reduce IT complexity dramatically
  • Lower electrical consumption by 90%
  • Minimize risk of theft
  • Increase security from viruses and malware – source

NComputing solution will run on MS Windows Server and will use MS office suite (will serve 7 users per PC)- expected savings of $20mn (source).

What’s interesting about this initiative is the change in govt.’s mindset about using new technologies.

What’s your take?

I am extremely delighted to know this.

I am sure computers will make their way to Indian Masses in millions in the years to come..

In a country like India, market dynamics are little different because of high population. Manufactures and marketers can bank upon expected high demand and usually smooth consumption. While Markets like Japan are driven by quality->quantity, Indian scenario is exactly reverse quantity -> quality.

Look at the expansion of telecom networks. Expect a similar response in internet arena.

This is indeed a sure good news for all potential startups.
