“Lot of the startups outsource their software/web development work to external companies. I have been getting my hands dirty on the same. However there have been a great variation in the charges for such services. Companies have gone from Rs 150 per hour to Rs 500 per hour. Some quoted about 45k for a 15 day worth of work with two resources (ofcourse the quality of the resources could be anybody’s guess.) Some even quote prices which they would ask an American MNC (not sure what they are thinking)

Interesting topic.
In my experience, the rates from a decent web-development outfit are upwards of 12-14$ per hour. Web development is a global business and the good developers are already getting paid in dollars. As a customer, you have to compete with those “American MNCs”.
You may be able to find good service which, luckily for you, has not yet tapped the international market. All I can say is, look at the credentials before you shell out the cash.
The 45K quote seems correct. I have asked around for my development too and it seems comparable to the rates I’ve been told. Though this rate is for a couple of years experienced engineer. If you want someone with more experience it would go higher.
$10 is ok.
To be honest, if I am a service provider – and I pay a salary of Rs X to the people who work for my company – do you expect me to charge Rs X for a month of effort ? Is running a service company that simple ?
I guess – Nilesh is right. Look at the credentials of the provider. Some samples of work already done should be a good indicator of that. And in some cases – talk to me. I am bootstrapping a company that provides services in the software development domain. You may like my prices
