Netizens prefer Social Networks over Porn Sites

Raise your hands if you are the type who spends more time on social networks than porn sites!

Don’t feel weird, ‘coz you aren’t the only one.

Netizens are preferring social networks over porn sites – these are findings from Bill Tancer (Directory @Hitwise)’s latest book “Click: What Millions of People are Doing Online and Why It Matters”.

Bill analyzed 10 million web users and has some interesting findings:

  • Elbows, belly button lint and ceiling fans are on the list of people’s top fears alongside social intimacy and rejection.
  • Annual spike in searches for anti-depression drugs around Thanksgiving time in the United States.
  • Surfing for porn had dropped to about 10 percent of searches from 20 percent a decade ago, and the hottest Internet searches now are for social networking sites [source]

One of the general argument is that people are spending more time on social networks and hence, they are getting lesser time for porn sites – but I guess, many of the socionets do provide ‘that’ level of informal channels (for e.g Orkut is a haven for voyeurism).

Are social networks impacting the way humans browse Internet?

What’s your opinion?

:O Isn’t everyone scared of sharp objects and needles? So its just me.

Anyway, its also notable how “Net communities and chat” have overtaken search engines. So now people spend more time networking with their contacts than searching for information on the web.

“Are social networks impacting the way humans browse Internet?”: It is also impacting for productivity in organizations. about $4Bn loss was seen in Europe due to SNS. Infosys and other big companies blocked all the sites expect to check ONLY official mails. Even in my current company SNS, Videos etc are blocked due to less productivity and it also makes less thinking in product development and makes more thinking is scraping.

there are advtgs and disadvtgs. one cant say SNS is best of all 100%.

Social networks has definitely affected the time spent on porn sites but mind you,Social networks have also become a breeding place for many call girls and many guys/girls spend hell big time on these networks just for a dirty chat or something.

So,ultimately what matters is the purpose that the social networks are serving.

One recent action of banning user accounts by Facebook guys is a cautious attempt to conserve the “actual” purpose of social networks or rather Social Utility(that’s what they call themselves)

    Hi Ashish !

A bit irrelevant but I have once concern to raise. How secure are we in the so called small time social sites. I will tell you the context. Just this morning I received a mail (spam) from some site called http://www.universityyaar.com. It said the same what spams usually say – you have been a member, please update your profile now and they had given me a username. So far so good.

What was startling was that they had mentioned my password also and that is the password I mostly use for such sites. How would they have come to know this? Isn’t our privacy compromised ? Are’nt we at risk?

Any idea if this universityyaar is affiliated to yaari or some other site of which I may be a member?

  5. [...] Netizens prefer social networks over porn sites, and one of the most significant behavioral reason is the entire notion of peeping into someone’s, i.e. real people’s life (aka: voyeurism). [...]

Prashant – well pointed out. Actually Ashish – I think you pointed out in a post how sex related videos came up when you typed in ‘indian’ into YouTube’s search box. If you drop by BigAdda.com and look at the most viewed section, you’ll find that the top results are are pretty much sex related. Social Networking sites such as Tagged are again highly ‘pick up’ oriented, and tend to tolerate adult content. Of course, Adult Friend Finder is one of the largest social networking apps out there, but this is not discussed in decent forums such as this one.
