ISRO’s Bhuvan to beat Google Earth

ISRO is working on an ambitious project called Bhuvan (means Earth), a satellite mapping tool.

Bhuvan allows you to zoom far closer than the aerial view from a chopper. If Google Earth shows details upto 200 metres distance and Wikimapia upto 50 metres, Bhuvan will show images upto 10 metres, which means you can easily see details upto a  three floor high building and also add information.

Bhuvan uses the data recorded by Indian satellites and the first prototype will be available by November.

Bhuvan’s edge over Google Earth

  • Google Earth’s Zoom levels up to 200 mt – ISRO’s Bhuvan      Zoom levels up to 10 mt
  • Google Earth: Single layer information   –   ISRO’s Bhuvan:          Multi-layer information
  • Google Earth: Images upgraded every 4 years -  ISRO’s Bhuvan:  Images upgraded every year
  • Google Earth: No alternate viewing options – ISRO’s Bhuvan:     Options of viewing on different dates
  • Google Earth: Uses international satellites – ISRO’s Bhuvan:   Uses Indian satellites

This is surely a big deal for ISRO which just launched Chandrayaan.

Breaking: ISRO has launched Bhuvan. Download ISRO Bhuvan.

    1. Great news indeed.
A clear edge over other leaders in the field.

And, I request ISRO to redesign their portals too.. :P

Sir, Please try it once. I find it very very tough to search for my street. Even after struggling for 30 mins, I failed to find it. And finally left a feedback for the ‘Bhuvan techies’ as …
First requirement in these kind of applications is to ‘think user is not aware of computers and hence the usage should be very simplistic’. Me being a computer analyst, is finding difficult to search for my street. It is very very tough. The views keep rotating. That is really very bad. For a user, first and foremost thing is to get the info user wants. NOT the jazzy features of rotating. All these doesn’t make sense without giving the basic information. So to me the effort here is gone into making it a jazzy like movies instead of giving information and making the life of ‘user easy’.

WOW!! this is sure the one to look for…

    3. Nishit says:

but I still have one doubt… it says that wikimapia gives upto 50m and google earth 200m, which is wrong comparison, because wikimapia also uses the data by google itself.

    4. Alagu says:

Is this Map data only for india or worldwide?

    5. Whoa! what a news. Is it gonna be a reality for sure? @Ashish, do we have any other sources of the news yet(except TOI)? If it’s so, I’m waiting eagerly for the November prototype. Nishit’s doubt is true. Any clarifications?
@Alagu, I doubt they’ll provide the world’s data. Only Indian satellites don’t cover the whole of it as I know.

No single satellite can cover the whole planet, let alone ours. It requires three geo synchronous satellites to cover every inch of our planet.

        • Nilesh says:

          @Desi Trends,

A single satelite CAN cover the whole planet if it is put in a low-altitude polar orbit (thus is NOT geosynchronous). The earth rotates from west to east and the satelite would go from north pole to south pole and so on. That way, the satelite’s camera can sweep the whole planet surface.

BTW, in your statement, you mean “geo-stationary” satelites and not geo-synchronous satelites. There is a difference between both.

          cheers
          nilesh

        • Short blade says:

What do you mean let alone ours? And haven’t you heard of something called polar orbits?

This is really great news, thanks for the info!

    9. Nishit says:

      @Easton

bhu-va-n – ‘u’ as in ‘fruit’ and ‘a’ as in ‘agree’

    10. Kamal Thakur says:

      wonderful..
m not sure if it ll b availabl to everyone out there…. as such it feels great to see ISRO going great..

    11. Unmesh says:

Couldnt be happier. The current Google maps are not completely accurate (read old) with roads laid out a year ago missing from the maps even for big cities in India. Besides, competition is going to be good – esp when it comes to licensing the maps. I sure do hope that ISRO takes a page from Google’s ease of use/integration when implementing Bhuvan.

    12. Mac says:

      Absolutely fantastic scenario.

Our scientists inarguably are the best in the world when it comes to deliverability to resources ratio.

      • yashpal says:

i wanna say that it is one of the best project of isro who can compete google earth. it will help all the peoples to access the the entire world with interest .

    13. Rizwan says:

I say this project would be shelved OR probably, even if we complete it, we will be so late that my children would be teleporting themselves using the latest app by Google – Our scientists may be the best….but our funding is certainly not…..

      • Mac says:

our funding certainly is not a real big one in comparitive terms to that of a NASA or any other country’s organisation. But our guys have been doing wonders with what they have been given. Its really hard to believe that ISRO is able to achieve what it has with a paltry budget of $650 million (unless i am wrong with the figure) as opposed to billions of dollars being ploughed into a NASA. check this link http://desitrends.blogspot.com/2008/11/isros-bhuvan.html (disclaimer: i am not trying to sell my link here.)

Populating data and imagery in a database requires little expertise

I feel ashamed every time I see a foreign GIS engine manipulating Indian data – be it maps or imagery

Google Earth’s Zoom levels up to 200 mt
Bullshit. GE is way higher than that resolution

Google Earth: Single layer information – ISRO’s Bhuvan: Multi-layer information
Google supports as many layers of information that your piss-assed computer can handle

Google Earth: Images upgraded every 4 years – ISRO’s Bhuvan: Images upgraded every year
Again, where are you getting this GE statistic? Bullshit on this again

Google Earth: No alternate viewing options – ISRO’s Bhuvan: Options of viewing on different dates
Bullshit again – GE gives you an entire date range of nearly 10 year since 2000 of images for most of India

Google Earth: Uses international satellites – ISRO’s Bhuvan: Uses Indian satellites
      And how does this matter?

We will now prove India’s greatness of culture and mathematics which has been world famous since long time ago like aryabhata and others. We are better than google which is a great achievement. This will stand shoulder to shoulder with our other great inventions of the recent times like the Simputer, the Soleckshaw and the Sakshat laptop ($10 laptop). Maybe it should be name Super-bhuvan because all the other great modern miracles our respacted Indian government has invented also start with ‘S’, which is also the first letter of Sanskrit, which many scientists also say is the most greatest advanced language for scientific purposes.

      Let us celebrate our greatness.

      - Downloading the map when zooming or else (when you can reach it!) is very slowly (I can view all the Earth by Google on the same time ^^).

But, don’t forget this is the beta version of Bhuvan.
Anyway, I keep an eye on it, because you already can see some button utilities, like :
      - drawing
      - calculating distance
      - and others (I don’t remember)

I think it will be a nice tool, but not for know. Maybe in 2 years ^^ (kidding…)

      Is allahabad surrendered to China??????
Its very interesting that Bhuvan is having Great Utility…. If you look for a news in Allahabad, It will take you to China and Land that portion and show that Allahabad is in china….Already Pak and China are enjoying Kashmir…. Now its great that China is virtually sharing Allahabad tooo….. Hats off ISRO…. How you can surrender indian territory to China>>>>>>>>>>>>>

      Come on India….

    122. K. Prakash says:

Dear ISRO team who is instrumental in designing and developing a web based application for viewing the streets and lines as well as important land marks in our country with in a resolution of 10M is it worth to take the risk after the present scale of events that shock Mumbai….
How far is this technology going to help common man or since our country is agrarian how have you planned to bring the benefits out of this application to normal persons in our country.
How well the access to the particular url protected?
Though the present ambitious plans of reaching our nearest planet, the resent commissioning of nuclear submarine “Arhant”, the on going flight test for mother of all defiance contract [10b $] 120 multi roll combat air craft, negotiations with regard to INS Vikramaditya are all good signs and some thing to be proud by each and every citizen of this country and who feel to be Indian but what about the steps taken towards “Global warming, poverty, unemployment”
Though this msg could be of negative thought, I would like to congratulate our ISRO team who has put their good efforts for bringing up such facility.

      Thanking you

      Bhuvan the BEST IN WOELD

    125. Can I run Bhuvan on Mac OS and Linux?
No. At the moment Bhuvan can run only on windows system and is optimised for IE 6.
      —-
Because it is a sambar of .NET, directX, Internut explorer and Windows. What I’m crying is… @#!%^%$#!T*&****#@!#^&… sitting in front of my machine running Linux and Mozilla Firefox, unable to see Bhuvan, WTF is system software requirements, are they saying that I’m a looser.. if there is no windows in my machine..? It is a shame to see the ISRO put up such a big thing ONLY for Microsoft customers. I’m defenitely not proud of ISRO on this.

The first thing to consider before puting something to the internet is; whether it is compatible with all common platforms and browsers which might be used across the world to access it. It is rude to say on the web that a particular browser or operating system is required to see your site. When it comes to a website of such massive attension (Bhuvan or anything ISRO) it is madatory to hug this basic rule.

ISRO… please shut the crap website down and save 1.1 billions Indians from this www shame. Also.. tie all those ‘MicroShaft dotNuts’ to a rocket and light up the tail :)

Please read the rule number eight:

      VERY WELL DONE ISRO!!!

It simply doesn’t work. It is no match for Google Earth. Google Earth is far better and extremely user friendly. Google Earth is so easy to log in and use.

Bhuvan is a big hoax played by our scientists on the people of India. All claims made by ISRO is just bull shit.

No nation became great by false claims.

      Is some one listening?

bhuvan has loat of disadvantage.bhuvan covers mainley in india .clarity of bhuvan i very low.bhuvan software is very bad compare to google. bhuvan do not allow to watch the place at 10 m it is wrong.google earch is the best. asimple child can use google earth.all places are marked in google earth not in bhuvan.you can start worrk with google earth just cliking the single application.for opening of bhuvan requare loat of things.bhuvan is using loats of mb data more than google eaRTH.
