IIT M and IISC have partnered to build the world’s cheapest laptop – that will be priced at $10! $100 (see below for details)
For the $100 laptop, research is being carried at IIT M/IISC:
The laptop, when produced, will prove to be a breakthrough device that could solve the problems of low computer literacy and e-learning not only in India, but also the world over – HRD Ministry.[via]
Not sure how much of this is feasible, but if it is, it can potentially drive everyone crazy!!
India earlier rejected OLPC’s proposal which was later taken by Reliance’s ADAG group.
Update: As Mukul pointed out, the Indian govt. has issued fresh statement stating that the laptop will be priced @ $100.
What’er be the price, a homegrown solution is more acceptable and welcoming and hopefully will have local language keyboard as well.

Correction it is not $10, it is $100 – http://bit.ly/10-100 .
Mukul.
Yeah right. What about Simputer which was supposed to be under 5K ? GoI has a history of making bombastic claims and then not delivering on them. Bring it out and we’ll see.
BTW, I do believe that a sub-$100 laptop is technically feasible.
cheers
nilesh
Id rather call it the Rs.4,200 laptop.

i want to buy this type of laptop.can anyone tell me where i will get this.
thanks
I think this is wonderful, if it can be done. India, between this and the Tata Nano and Bollywood can dominate the market in the Developing World. I think that if India keeps on with what looks like a “I pull you up, you pull me up” type of program it will indeed make India a superpower and the leader and champion and source of inspiration for the 3rd World that China or the West could never be. An incredible future is ahead for India. As a westerner who long prayed for India’s success I am feeling good at the progress and innovation I see in India and the potential there is for India’s future.
Great post
