Well..after the $10 laptop debacle, comes another great innovation from India – Soft drink made from cow urine.
And the ‘inventors’ this time aren’t from IISC or the IITs, but RSS (yeah, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh)!
“..the drink – called “gau jal”, or “cow water” – in Sanskrit was undergoing laboratory tests and would be launched “very soon, maybe by the end of this year”.
“Don’t worry, it won’t smell like urine and will be tasty too,..Its USP will be that it’s going to be very healthy. It won’t be like carbonated drinks and would be devoid of any toxins.” – Cow Protection Department, RSS.

It’s amazing how few groups attempt to make a fool of the country (*) – especially when we are advancing ahead.

*Update: Unless RSS ‘scientists’ prove that they have really achieved this pathbreaking ‘soft drink’, I guess they are just playing the hindutva card (and in turn, are making a fool of the country in front of a wider audience)
Cows urine is considered sacred by hindu mythology and have seen people using as a spray on occasions….never seen anyone drinking….

I know that this is your blog and you have all the rights to express anything you want. But, this sentence seems to be a bit arrogant(if i can use that word). They may have some holy(or not so holy) thoughts behind this project. But, without any proof, how can you comment that they are trying to make a fool of the country?
I certainly believe that if the creators(or inventors) of this drink can address all the possible questions then they may become successful in finding a niche for themselves.
Whether they find a business sense for it or not, but, i appreciate them for the efforts they are putting in spread Hindutva and save the sacred animal COW. I wish, they have got right intentions.

Cow Urine is used for curing certain diseases and is available even today in India though for a pretty good price. The cows used are not the ones that keep roaming our cities’ streets. Its usage is based on the intensity of the disease. For that matter, so many insects, animals, etc. are used in the preparation of drugs.

Will cow-urine become a fad? I hope not as this means that too many people of our country are sick. I hope nothing becomes a fad as it causes upswings/downswings in the economy. If everyone maintains their health then one may never need to drink cow-urine or for that matter even take simple pills like Crocin, etc.
Most of us seem to lack the discriminative abilities of a sharp intellect. Unfortunately, RSS seems to be caught on the wrong foot even while trying to do something right. Aren’t each of us a sum of good and bad? So how can we throw a stone at someone when we ourselves have committed a mistake.
I have personally never drunk Cow Urine and may not drink in this life time. At the same time, there are other drinks-Coke, Pepsi, soft drinks that I do not want to drink in this life time as they too are very harmful to the body even though these products are being endorsed by celebrities.
Progress does not mean accepting and following whatever the West does. All Indians should delve deep into our history to understand why our past was so glorious and maybe we can resurrect it. So, we should never denounce anything, however incredible, unless we have tried, tested and confirmed that something works or does not work. Isn’t this the scientific method rather than throwing out an idea just because it sounds nauseating?

I just had a chat with one of my authentic friend who has very deep knowledge of all these things. Infact he has tried out cow urine. He had a serious cough problem and he could see the difference within two days. He warned me that it has to be taken properly.
Moreover, cow urine treatment is not RSS product. It’s there in India for ages.
It would be unscientific to discard this too without experiments.
It would be great if we get the results confirmed from a well reputed laboratory outside India. If this is wrong then govt must ban it otherwise we must promote it and ridicule those who ridicule India.
Someone told me that cow dung can cure cancer. Let’s hope NIH funds a grant to verify that. Jai Go Mata!

Everything can be sold as long as one knows how to sell. If this gets sold in rural parts of mid-Indian states I would not be surprised. Do you guys know some years back there was an effort to sell mineral waters which is supposed to be prepared from the “Ganga” waters? I do not know the result of that business venture, but I do not recall seeing that brand sold any more.
If projects like this keeps RSS and it’s goons from killing innocent people of other faith, then I am willing to contribute some money towards it, but, alas, that is not to be. Regarding the selling part, I believe the people who trusts entities like RSS selling ancient Indian drink, deserves to be shafted in the rear. So I am not worried.
Much of our old culture/education/concepts are lost, but then everything that comes from tradition is not acceptable, there should be ample evidence that some traditional practices work and then only we should accept and protect it.
Not just in India but Cow urine was used in the west too for centuries. The Vikings used Cow urine as a medicine, detergent(urine has high ammonia content).
The question here as I understand is whether or not RSS is trying to use traditional knowledge/practice for a vested interest. The answer for this is a resounding yes, and hence this publicity stunt by them should be discouraged.
