Laptops for $10 – Indian Government does it again

Few days back, Indian govt. announced $10 laptop, but realized the typo and immediately hiked the price to $100. The story is back again!

Govt., in partnership with IIT M and IISC is again claiming to have developed a $10 laptop which will be available in 6 months.

“The computer will be a small equipment with expandable memory, LAN and Wi-Fi facilities. The government will also produce e-content on every subject which will be made available free of cost.

..lot of testing has to be done to ensure that the technology works properly. Once the testing is over, the computers will be made available on commercial basis. The target is to make it available in six months time,” – source

Leaving all the hype, I’d like to hear from any of the IITM/IISC friends on feasibility of this $10 laptop. Is this for real?

I used to think that only Indian Government could con the people but now that it has been shown that Negroponte has no clothes on as well, i think this a new business model to justify research rupees for the Indian government, IIT etc.
This reminds me of the “sale of its useless IP” that CSIR has been attempting for a few years. I first read about this in Nature around 2006 and had a good laugh but here they are recycling this too as follows from livemint:

Its a green tech model – recycling bs! ha ha

Yes I am from IISC, there would be two variants to support MAC/Vista.It comes with 256MB video card, so you can also play high graphics game. Also, currenly R&D is being carried out to check if this can be deployed as Server as well.More informations available on “http://daydreamer.com/”
