Yahoo India Launches Spotm – Social Networking Portal

September 19, 2008
By sinha

Yahoo India has launched Spotm, social network for the Indian market .

The product is currently in closed beta (invite only) and boasts of a neat UI and interesting feature set.
Social networking in India is largely dominated by Orkut and Facebook and it would be interesting to see how Y! fares.

I have 3 invites to give away – leave a comment if you wanna test ride the product.

YASNS!!… ok that was Yet Another Social Networking Site.

I thought we were done with them, maybe I should think of launching another one & I just might be lucky and someone will acquire me :) )just kidding.

That aside Ashish what’s with Yahoo? Have you heard their new radio ads playing on Radio Indigo for Yahoo India Search? Faster Search Engine which gives you answers on first page… seriously chief, you should be telling them not to run such lame ones :D

    Hey Ashish!

Well can I get a chance to have a look at it..
Expecting that its not as worse as it earlier Mosh (Or something, I even forgot the name..)

    Waiting for the link..

    Why?
you mean they want to catch them young? not sure why yahoo cant think like a opensocial platform..when will they stop ‘add friend’ game.

anyways, i dont fall under the target audience..:)..so i might be wrong

“typical target group: college going kids, 16-24 years”

Kids of 16-24 years age? Looks like someone is getting old here :)

How do they position the product to attract the youths, as youths are always hangout in orkut/FB, how y! is trying to attract those ppl. Since y! has great products behind the portal.

As deepak says it looks to be just another social network from a known company.
    2 things about the promotion
    - Invite concept !!!!! are you kidding ?
would I wait to get an invitation or simply log into orkut/fropper/hi5 ………. 1000+ etc………
had they followed 4 years back, people would have had some curiosity left to give it a look

    - url simplicity
    http://in.spotm.yahoo.com/welcome
I am gonna googleit everytime I login

How many of you remember yahoo’s professional networking site !! it starts with KICK and ends with START :)

Do yahoo restrict the access based on email address ? I mean if the user needs to have .edu mail address.I dont thinkso. Then how do they going to ensure the person who is signing is less than 24? I think they will gain some user base and open to everyone.

Anyway do give me a invite, as a early adopter of tech :-) i would like to try :D

The best among this list is http://www.IndiaStudyChannel.com. What makes it different is:

      1. It is an educational website with lot of social networking features.

      2. Members earn revenue from Google AdSense while they spend their time in that site.

So, it is a social networking site with revenue opportunities and educational value.

Well, india is dominated by social networking site orkut.. It looks difficult for yahoo! to be successful in india with Spotm until they come with out of box, something innovative…

I feel the battle of social networks in India will come down to 2 networks: Facebook and Orkut. All others will be a also ran or employ a struggling strategy of building temporary “user accounts” through spamming popular social networks.
Orkut is in danger and faces from an outsider – Facebook which seems to be gaining more momentum day by day. With products like Apps, FriendConnect, etc Facebook is kind of grabbing market share, although it is slightly overshadowed by Orkut due to lack of any aggressive branding or strategy by facebook (who I am guessing is taking a hands off apporach for Facebook India for now at least)
I wish India start-ups aim for something out of the box and reach out to a global audience. Products like Twitter, Meebo, Facebook, etc coming out of India will be the day India is on the global map and is recognized instead of being relegated to a “background-services oriented” country
