Orkut apps and MySpace apps – both the big social networks are attempting to attract Indian developers;
and Facebook cannot stay behind in the emerging markets.
FaceBook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg is in India (as per TC’s post) and though I saw this news in the morning, I was trying to get hold of the masala.
From what I could gather (courtesy: one of the trusted sources), they will make some big appointments + announcements in the next few days.
Here is what I speculate:
- Announcement of FB apps – some attempt to attract the developer community. Catch them before they start building MySpace/Orkut apps.
- Focused strategy for Indian market – and some key appointments.
Something I don’t expect them to do is to open an India dev center.
What do you think? With all the biggies focusing on India, will BigAdda and ibibo‘s strategy to attract the Indian crowd using media chics will work?
What will happen to homegrown networks like MingleBox, yaari, Indyarocks etc

Couple of years back when social networking hit the net i recevied invites from atleast five of them. I had joined them all. Later I realiased that almost all my friends were on Orkut – for those in India or Face Book – those in US/UK. I continue to receive invites from diffrent social net works and the only one I have taken up is linkedin. I guess most of the users will have a similar rxperience. Keeping all this in mind I am quite sceptical of the success of BigAdda/ ibibo and host of others which have sprung up. My take most of them will cash out / close down

orkut will be be more popular than facebook
minglebox and bigadda have tons of money
they will spend more than facebook
I think Zuckerberg is here only to see what Google holds for him here (much in line with TC post that you linked to)
Maybe to start India operations, he needs some honchos and where else than Google, India eh
