Barcamp was fun…and

an amazing experience too. I was lucky enough to meet few very very bright guys [and girls!!] and even shamelessly begged for cigarettes [Rajeev?:)] !!

Here is my Barcamp presentation on What works/doesn’t work in Indian social networks

nice points about indians in orkut..
from my personal experience, some of my friends whom i sent invites just when orkut started..said ..’kya bakwaas bhejta hai’…now all of them are on orkut. one of the reasons is since everybody else is there..u have to be there too..
so in a way it also works as batchmates.com for indians

    4. Ashish says:

Oh yes! Infact, it’s the network which drives people to use a product. Its’ like if all my friends are in Orkut, I have to be there!
But having said that, there is still a room for kick-ass social nets in India. It’s just that the desi sites [so far] are way too busy blindly copying features from MySpace/Orkut/ Hi5 etc.

      Somebody needs to think!

      Dude
Enjoyed your talk. You brought up the behavioral aspects of social networks in India – something which the desi product guys dont even care about..

      will stay pluggd in :)

Interesting Slide Deck – I wish I could have seen it but was at BarCampOttawa3.

Can you expand on what you mean by online vs. online & offline as well as Theme based networks.

    9. Ashish says:

      Peter
By Online vs. offline usage, all I mean to say is that the social nets arent just about a website or a product. It has to achieve a bigger objective – i.e. enriching our lives as well [by adding some fun/some learning etc. etc]..

Given the fact that it’s difficult to beat Orkut in India, I strongly believe that theme based networks, i.e. vertical networks will work.
There are quite a few examples of vertical nets in India and if executed well, stands a lot better chance than a regular copy of MySpace + Orkut + Hi5 + …+.

Peter, email me [ashishk.sinha@gmail.com] if you want more discussion!! I will be glad to discuss this.
