We covered the launch of SMSGupshup’s developer platform earlier and the company has now formally announced the launch of AppShup, the SMS App platform.
Appshup developer platform allows developers to develop sms-based applications and services quickly and easily; and requires developers to have only a basic knowledge of any programming language, understanding of web applications and familiarity with JSON and XML
Unlike other developer networks, AppShup reduces the launch time from months to only days by pre-enabling carrier approval processes hence reducing the launch time from months to only days by pre-enabling carrier approval processes.
Moreover, AppShup aims to solve many of the current issues that developers face today. These issues include Interfacing with multiple mobile carriers, accessing application development resources and tools, dealing with the carrier approval process, integrating with the mobile networks and launching the application.
SMSGupShup Raised $12mn From Globespan Capital Partner, CRV and Helion in the month of January,2010 (total of $37mn funding raised), and the company claims to account for 5% of all SMS traffic in India.

How is different from the developer platform announced earlier? I don’t know if there were any takers for their developer platform. This just seems like an old wine in a new branded and well marketed bottle.

At least some one is doing it in India
And the brains behind this is one of their most accomplished Devs – Anand Prakash. Note the play on the Name – AP – and APpShup.
Way to go SMSGupshup!
Have they changed anything recently or is this just re-branding? I remember seeing this developer platform for atleast an year now.
Are people really confused between a developer platform and an app store? Let me give a hint, developer platform == MS Visual Studio. App store == That place in iTunes where you download free or paid apps for your iPhone.
One lets you develop your app, another lets you showcase, promote/sell your apps to users.
Oh yes! And the developer platform shd translate to app platform – otherwise its not commercially viable.
