Reliance NetConnect – Simple Mistake Can Hurt

If you are on Reliance Netconnect USB data card, this post is for you and the billing mistakes that I encountered with my Reliance Netconnect data card.

To cut the long story short, my observation tells me that Reliance Netconnect deducts the about-to-be downloaded data the moment download begins.

For instance, I started download from openoffice.org and immediately noticed a deduction of ~200MB in my account. For some reason, the download failed and I restarted the download.

Again a deduction of ~200 MB!

Stupid as it may sound, it seems Reliance Netconnect deducts the file size worth of data transfer for heavy downloads – the moment download starts.

Right or Wrong? We all know the answer.

Has anybody experienced similar issues?

I strongly hope that all of such mistakes will change with BSNL’s USB datacard launch which is providing data transfer at a far lower price point.

But till then, keep an eye on your bill (telecom operators are known to inflate the bill, as well as subscription numbers).

PS: This post is slightly offtopic, but one can’t help writing about such issues when we all are talking about 3G, Connected world et al when operators haven’t even got the basic mathematics right.

As i have always been saying… Reliance ADAG is worst when it comes to technology and user experience.

I think one can actually file a complaint with TRAI for this and Sue them.

good observation.. have to check the bills

    3. Kalpak says:

It sounds funny that you are charged for just initiating a download. This assumes that Reliance network work like a proxy and track HTTP traffic. Doing it this way can work against them as what would happen if they did not track download as well as sending of POP / IMAP emails using e-mail clients.

I personally use NetConnect but never really tried to monitor billing. But I always wondered how they track usage as they need to do it at the packet level.

Will give it a shot and will update you about findings.

Reliance is the worst service provider. I faced multiple issues with their wired broadband in Noida: http://woikr.com/wtf/reliance-broadband-woes

Bottom line – Stay away from all Reliance products (except maybe their shares).

Well ..I has equal bad experience with reliance netconnect.

They always bill wrong and owing to this download trauma I have paid my monthly internet bill to 3000+.

I have also filed a complaint in consumer court for bill issues.

    9. Kalpak says:

Tried the same thing. I did not see the same behavior. I do not see my balance going down after just initiating the transfer and canceling it.

This may well be as I am using Ubuntu (Linux) and have not installed the reliance provided dialer / software. I personally haven’t faced many issues with the NetConnect but I feel it is expensive. I currently use 3GB prepaid which costs me 935 Rs. Any better options?

      Hi,

I had a strange experience with Reliance netconnect. All of sudden it stopped working. When I called up to complain they said I had asked them to disconnect…!!!??? I had to argue I never did.

Finally they asked me to pay for 1 month extra. I had to buy a new number to reactivate….

      Horrible customer service.

      Regards,
      - VIN

I think my father is going to enjoy taking them to consumer court! I will update you folks on how it went. Do we have some audience here who can participate in raising their voice and corroborating the case?

    12. Pradeep says:

It happens often with reliance. A friend of mine had similar experience with reliance mobile. They used to charge him every now and then for the caller tune.. even when he unsubscribed after calling the customer care. After a lot of argument, they agreed and returned the balance to his account though.

i too had billing issues but was happy with the speed . I shifted to reliance from another service provider as i wanted high speed and good connectivity which i got but there were some billing issues but since da past 2 bills they have been resolved and now i am very happy with netconnect reliance .I think its far better than the others atleast . The billing glitch has been resolved and da tariffs are also reduced … its great

      Hi
I have downloaded bitmeter from this website.
      http://codebox.org.uk/downloads/bitmeter
It keeps track of your internet usage continuously. It has a small floating window which shows download speed and upload speed.Right click on window, click settings and then statistics, you get the usage of a session.I have used it for 2 hrs now feeling good.

I read a post above regarding using Reliance NetConnect from Linux, not Windows. That means not usung their dialler software. I am doing the same and I can tell you guys, its entirely different experience. While earlier I was using their windows dialler and always wondered about the inflated data usage their records would show.

Using Linux (I have changed to prepaid broadband service now), I think I am paying exactly what am using. Teere are no inflated data usage if I don’t use their dialler software.

From Ubuntu (Linux), it works with a simple tweak and its a nice experience :-)

I am working in Bangalore. We have tested Reliance and tata photon broadband datacard in 3 places of Bangalore. I agree that Reliance datacard is good compare to other datacards.
But don’t expect that speed what they offer 3.1Mbps. When you see in Reliance netconnect window it shows nearly 600kbps. But this is misguiding you. Actually if you compare this is also wrong. I have tested this datacard by downloading WinZip (18MB). During download I have opened Reliance netconnect window in one side and normal download window in other side. In normal download window also we can check speed (bottom of the window), so don’t use any testing software. Reliance netconnect window shows nearly 600kbps and normal download window shows it as 60kbps. For work comfortable like in office landline connection we need 126kbps. But 60kbps also okay, np. So, Reliance is cheating, what they have done in the nectconnect window software that normal download speed * 10. That means 60kbps * 10 ==> 600kpbs. It is ultra cheating. But if you compare to other datacard, the Reliance Datacard is toooo good. I am using it for remote connection of my office desktop and using 5GB plan. 5 GB plan is more than enough. Normally it won’t reach more than 2 GB. And also there is no frequent restarting of connection problem like in BSNL landline and tata photon.

Another thing I want to add here is, if you are using datacard for remote office desktop connection at home. If you think you are going to use per day 8 hours then 5GB plan will come 34 days (maximum) (excluding other personal download). This is also I have tested and calculated. This is more than enough. If you minimize the remote connection window, then also you can save the usage (like putting in pause mode).

I had taken Reliance netconnect no-9379707095. The promised speed was 3.2 MBPS and ended up with below 2 KBPS.

When I complained the customer care person took me through series of lies telling hardware issue, OS issue, Anti virus issue and when nothing worked agreed that service was poor.

Then started the hazzle of closing the service. I had to write tons of mails and follow up to get the service closed.

Now the harrazement has started with Reliance personnel coming home to ask money in the name of due bills.

Wish oridinary consumers like me should not suffer similarly. Never go for Reliance netconnect. Worst decision of my life to take Reliance service. Mail me on srikanthkn@hotmail.com and I can send you the unpleasant mail chain that happens with customer care.

      Regards
      Srikanth
