Can page title improve your site’s stickiness? Well, look at the pic below and see it for yourself:
Except cricinfo, no other site (including cricketnext, cricket.yahoo, cricketbuzz and rediff) show the cricket scores on the page title!
Well, a valid question would be what’s the point in displaying scores on the page title? Why do it?
»For the simple reason that one can still track the scores, even after minimizing the browser – which essentially means that I will keep cricinfo.com as the active page before and after minimizing the browser, and of course will go to the site if some important event happens – i.e. in short, increased pageviews and stickiness to cricinfo.com
It’s such small features that makes a site sticky and can drastically enhance the usability.
What’s your opinion?

absolutely valid point ashish. there is also one new site called vcricket.com which also does the same.
A lot depends on the implementation of the functionality.. since most of the sites make use of frames so that only a part of the pages refreshes.. in those cases it might not have occured to the developer to change the window title.. but yes.. if the page is a single unit.. the title should definately have the score.. although I must say.. these sites depend on ad content to be viewed or clicked at.. if they provide the score in the title.. that purpose might be defeated..
Well this is very good. I would like to use it as regular score update. I don’t have to check the page again and again. So me being a user do not wish to see advertisements so often. There is no question of loosing their attention. Because it permanently draws attention.
They can have text commentary like
“Sachin Four” in the title page refreshing after regular event or time frame.
I enjoy Rediff live cricket scores because it has a lot of uncensored frustrated vernacular rants
Rediff is good to know the score and Cricinfo, to know what exactly happened on the field.
Ah ! We used to keep a window minimized with cricinfo.com on the computer that was used for projecting the course presentations. That way, the whole class could keep tab on the scores and updates even while the professors were teaching !
College days..
Hear hear, I find it great that Cricinfo does that, and as you said, it helps me monitor the score, and then when I see a wicket has fallen or something, I restore the window and read the commentary.
Also glad you’re using Ppera! more people should do so.
A bullshit idea(impractical), Why will i(Web-Portal) show u the content, when u are not going to see the Advertisements from which i am earning revenue?
I(Web-Portal) can provide(/Stream) content better than this, if u r going to pay me (aka, subscription)!
Stickiness can be increased through other medium(!!!)
Do not agree with you. Think of the customer first – money shall come.
this is awesome idea. small but cud make a significant difference. although title changing often cud be confusing and distracting sometimes. there shud be a seperate page title for purposes of seo, not sure if its any important though
it is a good idea. anything that does not need a manual refresh, and is still wanted by the user improves a site’s functionality.
Really its very good idea to to stick visitor to the site. Such a simple but good idea.
This is definitely a very simple intervention for improving stickiness. Wondering where else such a such a feature would help improve stickiness..
Nice observation Ashish. I also found it useful but I could not think of any other area where changing title would add the same value.
One area where I can think a feature like this might be useful is if one is participating in an auction and the bids are coming in real time. Offcourse there again it might be applicable when the auction is nearing closure or if there are lots of bids coming through. What you think?
Website is all about attracting and keeping customers. Once you have this clear mission, you will have thousands ways to improve, believe me !
