CPI(M) leader, Brinda Karat wants Google India chief to be arrested, for showing sex determination ads on Google India searches.
Earlier supreme court issued notice to Google, Yahoo and Microsoft for displaying ’sex determination’ ads and the issue has resurfaced, even though Google claims that they have blocked all of the ads on Google.co.in site.
The interesting twist is that Google will still show ads for ‘prenatal sex determination in Thailand’ (where sex determination is legal) and has a convincing argument:
it’s possible that if you try to find a prenatal sex determination facility in a country like Thailand where such tests are legal, you could find results and ads relating to that country. “But that’s like a library in India that keeps magazines from Thailand that may contain ads on prenatal sex determination,” he said. “You can’t hold the library liable.” – Google lawyer (via)
While lawyer argues, “Even if it is an ad that relates to Thailand, it is Google that is promoting it. And if the ad is in violation of Indian laws, then it should stop streaming the ad for India”
And now, Brinda Karat has demanded a ban on Google India and arrest of Google India head!
Isn’t that too much to ask for? What’s your take on this issue?
This isn’t the first time Google has been in news for advertising related issue - after 26/11 they even had ads that said ‘Pursue education in terrorism‘, a fallout of DKI (i.e. dynamic keyword insertion).

It amazes me that with so many other important issues plaguing the country, people (idiots?) like Brinda Karat is fixating on such a minor one.
Additionally, even if he wants to fixate on such minor issues atleast understand the technology before coming up with such bizarre solutions as banning Google.
This is a problem with these guys most of the time they talk about irrelevant things, make irresponsible statements and have no understanding of how things work.
It reminds me of a saying that applies aptly in this situation. It is better to keep quite and let the world assume that you are an idiot than to open your mouth and prove it. This is exactly what Brinda Karat is doing.

Although Brinda Karath is overreacting, I feel google should fix the problem. Pre-Natal Sex determination is illegal in India so they should not stream any such ads. It does not matter whether it is legal in Thialand or anywhere in the world. Instead of finding loop-holes in law Google should look how they can fix this problem. There might be technology problems but if you own the problem you can find the solution. Google is not owning problem right now.
She did not implicate Naxalites who are killing our police forces, but yes, for petty issue – ban the Google – the world wide tool for students and academicians.
The reactions to this story are appalling. It is because of the apathy of people like you that the gender discrimination in this country has gone to such heights. For people like you its more important that google has complete freedom to publish such sex determination procedures so that in future if you have a family, you too can kill a girl foetus when found out.
