Rs. 250 Crores Campaign for Advani’s Campaign..Will it Work?

February 9, 2009

Advani, on the lines of Obama is positioning himself as a ‘change agent’ – at a massive cost of Rs. 250 crores advertising budget.

“Advani will be hailed as a leader who could ‘lift India’s economic spirits’ out of the current downturn in a campaign costing the party over Rs 250 crore.

The Congress too is not to be left behind. In a big-ticket campaign, the Congress will launch itself to woo the voters soon.
It will play up Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi among others as agents of change and development. The Congress-led government of course has already channelised Rs 200 crore from its coffers into a pre-election campaign titled ‘Bharat Nirman’ on the lines of BJP-NDA’s ‘India Shining’ campaign launched five years ago.” – source

Advani’s Tryst with Social Media

The ad agency for BJP has created

As far as advertising is concerned, elections 2009 can potentially bail out the online advertising industry (say even if 20% money is funneled to online advertising).

What’s interesting is that many regional party offices have tied up with mobile players for voice ads (NDNC? Well, Indian politicians do not give a damn to NDNC) – and of the web companies, Google leads the Internet advertising.

If you are an ad network (know the list of online ad networks in India, Mobile ad networks in India), or have anything to do with advertising world – do not miss this chance.

Obama was an underdog (read: Lessons from Obama’s Victory, Analysis of Obama’s social media campaign ), but in case of Advani (and all other politicians) – most of us already know his political agenda. Do you think this massive advertising/social media campaign will help Advani?

I couldn’t figure out if 250 Cr is for online/digital marketing. I guess not.

it would certainly impress those who are online… however the BIG question is – out of those who actually queue up to VOTE how many are online or net literate… he may generate funds (by donation etc.) using this online campaign not Votes….

He is spamming all the sites by buying lots of adwords. It’s getting irritating.

With the kind of person he is, I don’t think it would work. And it shouldn’t.

  6. Jai on February 10, 2009 at 1:40 pm

Hopefully it works. He has to be the change India needs desperately.

I dont think so. As in obama’s case he is new into the political system so ppl gave him a chance. I dont find even 0.0001 % of any good use if BJP/advani/modi rise to power. I think there would be hung parliment.

And whatever media or advt promotion wont work because its an cheap eyewash and people know bjp’s hidden agenda. God Save India :(

250 crores on…online advertising? In India? Google India AdSense office must be popping the champagne bottles!

    • Ashish on February 10, 2009 at 10:36 pm

@Ankur Banerjee, its the total spend

    • Ashwan on February 27, 2009 at 12:51 pm

Also, the advertising is AdWords. AdSense is what you put on your blog/site to display AdWords ads.

There is big bench of strategic team that sits and decides each move of Mr. Advani’s campaign. Big heads across corporates like Google are also roped in. All IITs/IIMs and big b-school students volunteer for such work. I am sure most of us, dont know even a bit of internal things happening in a political party. If only all right things are conveyed to us directly, we could appreciate things better.
This campaign is actually directed to achieve this. Atleast the so called elite who sit at home and not vote, could understand and differentiate politicians(the right word) from swindlers and come out to vote.
*Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with either of the political parties.

Tell you what mr. Advani – don’t try to go all techy on us just before the elections…your tirades will get the fanatics votes anyway -why spoil/exploit the online youth?

No one wants to wear your silly tattoo. What this country needs is young blood – not conspiring old politicians, waiting for their moment in the sun while promoting communal divide and supporting mass murders of innocents like @ Ayodhya and Godhra.

Go contest in Nepal or something…at least its a Hindu state.

    Spare us!

  12. sumit on March 3, 2009 at 6:04 pm

btw how much did these guys spend on the india shining campaign ? :p

    • Vibha Babbar on March 4, 2009 at 10:49 pm

Surely much more than this one! That was almost a movement!

  13. Ankur on March 17, 2009 at 7:24 am

“most of us already know his political agenda.”

Ironic that the educated ones, are the least informed and the most cynical!

    It seems fashionable to bash!

He’s trying to connect with the educated who don’t vote, while the congress is happy distributing fish, to ensure its numbers are in place, and people keep coming back to it.

It’s a technical observer’s blog and not a political one, so shall avoid further comments!

Only hope is, educated people complete their research and critique, rather than make rhetoric allegations!

    • Vibha Babbar on March 23, 2009 at 12:36 am

The point in question is not about commenting on a technical observer’s blog. Educated people, who are priviliged to use Internet are using this medium to vent out their views. Advani’s agendas are equally verbose and weasel with the so-called un-educated, or the non-priviliged class.

“It seems fashionable to bash”- “It seems unfashioanble to vote for a person who does not even know its target audience”.

On a technical front, or clearly otherwise, Advani and his policies are a huge misfit for the nation.
