Orkut gets more chatty – you can chat with multiple friends now

Orkut has improved GTalk integration and now pops out the chat window,a much-needed improvement as compared to the earlier version. The new release has also added chatting with multiple friends at the same time (via).

Orkut vs. Facebook

Facebook is gaining traction in India and while I have no data point to say this, but I have a strong belief that many of the savvy users are leaving Orkut for Facebook (though Orkut is still going strong).

Yeah Ashish, it seems true …. that a lot of junta has migrated along with their social trees into Faceboook…but not many have deleted their accounts on Orkut….there is a strong reason to believe that orkut would rise as a phoenix sometime again, when masses decide to look back..:)

Orkut needs to find it’s own niche very soon. Much like how MySpace is trying to transform into a music/entertainment hub.

Is @MySpace doing that great?? having their co-founders pushed out of the arena and others taking over business myspace would be a bad example to follow for orkut… :)

        • Navaneeth says:

It is about adapting your business to the market realities. MySpace co-founders left *after* they lost deal of market share to Facebook. They are still big (130 million) but it is apparent that they cannot compete head-on with Facebook. Hence they have tweaked their value proposition. For example, they recently launched an email service to all their users. This made them one of the largest email providers, beating gmail overnight. Will this help them survive ? I am not sure.

Same is true for Orkut. If they try to offer the same value proposition as Facebook, they will pretty much lose the game over time. The challenge for Orkut is to start providing unique value that Facebook cannot provide. Be it becoming a Bollywood hub or providing India specific services or whatever.
