It handles the sudden spike very well, else you might end up getting Internal Server errors (500) all over your website, the moment you are slashdotted or whatever. I have been through both sides of the coin... so it is always better to have the WP-SuperCache plugin turned on. You never know which post of your makes it to the grand daddies of Social Bookmarking! The WP-SuperCache plugin is indeed a very important one if your blog makes it to slashdot or techcrunch.
