Web based Project Management Software – THE Grand List

In continuation of our coverage on (Free) Software for Startups, here is a grand list of project management software for startups (and small businesses). Few of these softwares are open sourced (GPL license), while others are available for a nominal fee.

Here is the list (in no particular order):
Huddle
gives you simple, secure online workspaces containing powerful project and collaboration tools. Huddle is hosted, there’s no software to download and it’s free to get started. Offerings include online collaboration/workspaces, project management, document sharing, Document management (version control), and whiteboarding. Free version entails 1 workspace and a GB of storage.

Basecamp
Won’t be wrong to say that 37signals evangelized the simplified version of project management software – the list of minimal-yet-powerful features includes instant messaging tools, file storage, CRM modules, iphone integration & integration with third party tools (like freshbooks for invoicing, PPM, DoneDone for issue tracking etc). Available as a hosted solution, free version of Basecamp only allows 1 user and 1 project (pricing runs between $24 & $149).

5pm – 5pm offers useful features (with minimalistic UI) like projects/tasks tree navigation, Sub-tasks (Task Dependencies, Project/Task priority/deadlines/status, Time tracking, Project Groups; and enables data import from Basecamp.

Collabtive
Collabtive feature offerings include Projects, Milestones, Role based access,Messaging and instant messaging, File management, Tasks, Basecamp import, Timetracking & Reporting. Collabtive is also freely available as an Open Source download under the GPL (hosted versions are also available).

Project Pier – ProjectPier is a Free, Open-Source, self-hosted PHP application (written using PHP, Javascript and MySQL) for managing tasks, projects and teams through an intuitive web interface. ProjectPier will help your organization communicate, collaborate and get things done Its function is similar to commercial groupware/project management products, but allows the freedom and scalability of self-hosting (available under AGPL license).

GoPlan
GoPlan’s claim to fame is the marriage between a clean interface and useful feature set. Feature offerings includes Tasks, Milestones, Issue Tracking, Discussions, Time Tracking, Calendar, Activity Stream, File versiong, gmail style tags and ofcourse, ability to import Basecamp data.
Free plan includes 3 projects, 2 users & 2 collaborators.

ClockingIT
ClockingIT is a completely free project management tool that has pretty much the same feature set as any other collaboration suite. You can either signup for the web based platform or run the same on your server (code is available under MIT/X11 license).
Written on RoR, ClockingIT boasts of a neat UI and is probably one of those applications which people will readily pay for.

OnStage
Free version (supports unlimited users) of OnStage is ad-supported, but pretty much offers the same set of features as paid ones. Offerings includes ability to create Gantt charts, PDA support, Reply to Messages Directly from Outlook/Blackberry and more.

DeskAway
Easy to use, DeskAway is an online collaboration tool that lets you manage projects, has elements of social networking, delegation and tracking etc. The free version lets you manage 3 projects with 5 people.

Redmine – Redmine is a flexible project management web application. Written using Ruby on Rails framework, it is cross-platform and cross-database. Redmine is open source and released under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2 (GPL). Offerings include Multiple projects support, Flexible role based access control, Flexible issue tracking system , Gantt chart and calendar, News, documents & files management, Feeds & email notifications, Per project wiki, Per project forums, Time tracking and more.

Zoho Projects
The beauty of Zoho projects lies in it’s integration with other Zoho products (rather the entire suite) and ofcourse with Microsoft Project. Few useful features includes Project stream, calendar, document sharing, forum discussion, group chat etc.

activeCollab
activeCollab is a project management & collaboration tool that you can set up on your own server or local network. Work with your team, clients and contractors in easy to use environment, while keeping full control over your data. activeCollab comes in two flavours – Small Biz and Corporate.

Other online project management tool includes ProofHub and ProjectOffice and OpenGoo (open source).

    What is the best open source alternative for MS Project and the best open source UML modeler (flowcharts, use cases, class diagrams etc)?

    Don’t forget about Intervals, a great web-based project management app for those who also need time tracking, task management, and invoicing.

    For us Remindo seems to be the right solution. The combination of Project management and intra group social networking features makes sure that everyone uses it frequently. The product solved half of my problems. Giver it a try.

    This is my preferred PM tool.

    Manual processes of attending projects can create major problems sometimes due to lack of accuracy. In web based project management software, all the errors can be removed easily and apart from that you can track and record all of your jobs. Even companies can customize project management software as per their requirements.
