IBM Goes SaaS-Y with Lotus Notes Domino

Lotusphere034

Big blue has launched SaaS version of Lotus Notes Domino, it’s email collaboration software.

Lotus Notes Hosted Messaging includes hosted mailboxes and the Lotus Notes client – costs between $8 and $18 per user per month.

The hosted service has certain limitations like space constraint (1GB-per-user-mailbox) and the service doesn’t gel well with Notes apps and databases – but nevertheless, this is an important development in the world of online collaboration software.

Microsoft’s exchange service is priced @ $10 (per user per month) – more as a ‘software+service’ offering – i.e. on-premise + cloud computing.

Is Software as a Service more geared for adoption that Software plus Service model? What’s your take?
