We earlier covered a hand powered mobile charger that enables you to charge your mobile phone by simply rotating a handle on the charger. ![]()
Now, Nokia has announced the launch of Bicycle Charger Kit that is compatible with all Nokia phones that have a 2 mm charging interface.
The kit consists of three components: a bottle dynamo, a charger and a phone holder. The bottle dynamo fits to the front of the bike with a mounting bracket. The charger and phone holder attach securely to the handle bars. The kit works on same principle as what you would find in how people in rural India fit dynamo to provide light to the bicycle in the dark.
The Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit starts charging at walking speed (6 km/h) and stops when your speed reaches 50 km/h. The total charging time varies depending on the phone and the cycling speed. For example, with just 20 minutes of cycling at 10 km/h you can power up a Nokia 1202 for 1 hour of talk time or 74 hours of standby time.
The product is aimed at emerging markets/developing nations where electricity is scarce, unreliable and expensive and will be available in Q4, 2010 [Price: Euro 18, i.e. ~INR 850).
If you look at some of the stories on how rural India copes with mobile battery recharge, people actually pay for mobile recharge in some parts of India (as simple as Rs. 3 for an hour to keep your mobile plugged into the charging point). Maybe this kit will set the economy on a move!
Also, given the kit’s support for range of Nokia phones (with 2 mm charging interface), expect a lot of cycle lovers (geeks) to start using this product.

Good concept….however the product is targeted at emerging markets. I feel the price point is little on higher side.Somebody driving bicycle can not afford it and somebody who can afford it will not drive bicycle.
Though its a good innovation.
you can charge it while exercising in gym using cycle.
It will be a crueal joke if you ask rural folks to buy a charger worth Rs. 850. Generally phones are bought at that price.
@Pravin, @Mahesh – That’s the launch price. As with any product, expect that to come down eventually.
This was featured in news last year… as an invention by a couple of students. Is nokia working with them or ripping them off? check links below…

I am working at a publishing house. I am a so-called creative guy. I design book covers and layouts… When I decided to commute to work on my eight-year old bicycle last year, it was for the first time I was touching the poor thing.
I mean I could see many new things while commuting each day. I felt I was connected with my surroundings when I took a walk or cycled. It gave me my ideas… I used to talk about such things and my friends would call me “crazy.” I think ‘crazy’ was their non-flattering way of calling me ‘creative.’
I used to cycle a lot when I was in my college. I was considered a creative guy even back then!
I was forced to abandon my bicycle when I got my first job. My office in South Mumbai. I hated traveling in trains as long as I worked there… I think I left the job last year because of train-sickness!!!
My current office is just half an hour ‘cycling’ from my place. And I love it. When people ask me why I cycle, I tell them, “For the environment…” I find it difficult when it comes to explaining to the people about my love for cycling… Maybe I fear they would call me crazy or something, you know. It’s not easy to awaken people and I don’t want to work night and day as hard as those folks at Jaago Re! I came across Jaagore.com when I wanted to create a group for green travellers. I have met many cycle lovers thanks to the group…. I have realized it’s not up to me to tell anybody what would work for them. We all have our own ‘Jaago Re!’ moments.
