Nokia has launched Nokia 2730, at a price of Rs. 4,499/ making it probably the cheapest 3G phone in India. Nokia 2730 is integrated with OVI suite of products and Nokia has embedded Nokia Life Tools service in the mobile as well.
The company has partnered with Airtel, enabling Airtel subscribers to post pictures for free for the first 2 months and 100MB of free data transfer (valid for 3 months) [more details at Airtel site]
Nokia 2730 Specification
- 2-inch QVGA display
- 30 MB internal dynamic memory
- microSD memory card slot with hot swap, max. 2 GB
- Nokia maps
- 2 megapixel camera
- 4x digital zoom – more details
What’s interesting about the combo is coming together of device and operator, in order to target the price sensitive Indian mobile users.
So what if mobile users aren’t browsing (well, there are only 2 Million Serious Mobile Internet Users in India) – a cheap phone combined with cheaper (rather free) data plan makes it an affordable solution; and if you recall the SMS growth, the most important part was when operators made it free (late 90s) and got people addicted to it.
Maybe, mobile Internet has a chance.

The chairman of Bharti Airtel, Sunil Mittal has indicated that 3G mobile services will not come cheap, as just the cost of spectrum is around Rs. 3,500 crores per circle. A monthly charge of Rs. 700-900 would only defray license fees and input costs. (Airtel won the bidding in 13 circles, including Mumbai and Delhi.)
This being so, buying a new mobile phone without wi-fi might prove to be detrimental. As the bid amounts for BWA are much lower, this would translate to more affordable charges to the customer.
So, for those who don’t want to be caught on the wrong foot, it might be worthwhile waiting until the issues become clearer. There is also the distinct possibility that all or most 3G/BWA mobile service providers would have bundled offers on introduction of the service.
Note: Aircel’s unlimited internet access schemes (Rs. 98 for a month, Rs. 14 for 3 days) use GPRS for internet access. Sometimes connectivity is very poor. On account of low data throughput downloads are almost out of question. But, it is okay for checking mail.
