RupeeMail – get paid to read emails (or spams?!)

RupeeMail is a recently launched “paid-to-read-email” product that basically helps you earn money by reading emails from advertisers!
How does RupeeMail work?rupeemail
All you have to do is register at their site and then you start receiving rupeemails. Each email will contain a link to advertiser site and also the monetary value of the click. Clicking on the link will get you richer by the monetary value of the ad.

A few questions (and a few observations)
Unfortunately, the target market for permission marketing (like RupeeMail) is not the market which advertisers would really want to target. What happens with such products is that the major subscriber base ends up with students who want to make some quick buck.
But is that the real target market for advertisers? In most of the cases, NO.

I instead see future for products like 160by2, since they solve some real pain (i.e. send free SMS across India) and in the process, they push ads with the SMS.

What do you say? Does paid-to-read-email has a future? Will you ever use it?
I look forward to your comments.

103 Responses to RupeeMail – get paid to read emails (or spams?!)

    1. Jim J says:

Thanks for the thoughts on RupeeMail’s opt in list. The good news is lists can be tested and results measured very cheaply. So, if RupeeMail’s list works for an advertiser they just roll out their campaign.

What I see as the greatest feature to RupeeMail is the ability to mail stamps to any opt in list an advertiser has – like their existing customer list. You might wish to learn about that part of RupeeMail as well.

    2. Reghu says:

I was a bit surprised hearing for about the PAID Email Service called RupeeMail is launched in India. Since I am a person who is into online marketing the news naturally got my attention. So I spend some time studying this new venture (www.rupeemail.in) and I found this really impressive and I have my own reasons for this.

First this is that the Company is claiming RupeeMail as a unique tool against spam, and reading through Ashish’s comments made me more curious and with a detailed study I observed the following points.

The Emails are received only by two categories of recipients- one the users who have registered with RupeeMail and getting promotional emails from various advertisers. ( so the senders are known- so i feel there is no question of spamming) Second group is the email list already the marketing companies are maintaining which obviously they would have collected during any business transaction, which they are going to use for their permission based email marketing programmes. (You can see the details in advertisers page) . So the recipients cannot be generalised as ‘students only’ and it will be great if I get paid for the promotional mails I read! I believe this tool can be useful for running attractive promotional campaigns, and discount offers …will lead to better returns for the advertiser and it’s going to have a great future. But many of the aspects like recipient always getting a unique code irrespective of the sender, I could not understand much. May be I will wait to see this the ads I get….

We all know increasing internet usage in India and this medium is not yet fully tapped and we have only touched the tip of the ice berg. So I feel it is too early to comment this is not a good product offering, but I am pretty sure that this will have a better value that all the SMS based promotions- simply due to the constrains of communication in an SMS!

    3. Ashish says:

@Jim and Reghu: I completely agree with the points made by you guys. Its an opt-in product and one will sign only if one wants to!

      Here are a few qns:
      > The basic product doesn’t solve any purpose – receiving an email is not a business solution to any problem. I believe in way2sms/160by2 model, since they solve a pain of sending free sms thru’ Internet.
      > Those who opt-in for such a service can be categorized only in 1 bucket – people who are looking for some quick pocket money.

The reason why I mentioned “students only” is purely because of mGignger’s stats – close to 35% users are students (linkand I don’t see Rupeemail users being any different!

I’d love to know your thoughts on this!

    4. Geo says:

      Ashish,

I was going through your post and comments, i would like to comment few things

The biggest problem which i see in way2sms/160by2 model are

      1) advertisers are very limited to what they can communicate through an SMS where through email they can express what they want in a much more catchy way.
      2) there is no easy integration to web from SMS as users has to later come to advertisers website to get more information where in email its very obivious.
      3) I still feel SMS is an intrusion to somebody’s privacy, where you check the email whenever you want.

For your second question, i dont see any problem in mginger having 35% students registered in it. Remember, advertisers are sending SMS/Email to their targeted group and there are advertisers who want to reach students, like people selling bikes, Universities etc. May be kingfisher airlines wont send their advertisement to students but Kington University in Melbourne will do. So i think there is a space for everybody here in this scenario.

way2sms/160by2 model also have the threat of people who just want to send SMS participating in it. Like lovers sitting in two cities…. :)

End of it i see it as great tool for targeted marketing.

      Kudos….

    5. Nikhil says:

Heh. This just screams “Bubble”. Anybody remember “Mailmetoday”, the now defunct mail service from the India Today group that was around during the last bubble? Was similar.

    6. Atul says:

@Nikhil – this time it’s a little different . This can have some user base because of the very nature of ads (and easy way to make money)
And who cares if ur user base is of students. Similar advertiser will flock in – who want to target students. Whats the problem then?

    7. Nikhil says:

Atul: If I get 500 students to sit and click on advertisements, it isn’t an incentive, it’s click-fraud, even if they are the target audience. Yahoo, Gmail, Indiatimes, Hotmail and Rediffmail – all have advertisements, but the key focus is on providing a product that people want to use, and then monetizing it with advertisements that get honest clickthroughs (whether they do or not is anybody’s guess).

SMS payment services have the same issue – as Geo mentions above, people might start using the service just to make money, and that really isn’t the advertisers target user.

    8. Ashish says:

Well..in the days of 5 million users registering to TRAI’s DNC service, I dont know whether serious users will ever use this service.

    15. Aziz says:

Apart from the problem of closing the advertiser window immediately, there is another problem of registering multiple accounts. Even though they do not allow multiple registrations from the same IP address, almost all residential subscribers have a dynamic IP address with a new IP address assigned each time they connect to the Internet. Read more on my take on RupeeMail on my blog.

    16. Rup Chandra says:

Thanks for the thoughts on RupeeMail’s opt in list. The good news is lists can be tested and results measured very cheaply.

    17. Geo says:

      Aziz,

How many email accounts you will create to receive RupeeMail ? 10-20 ? and you will remember all these ids and passwords and also login to these many email accounts every day to just get RupeeMail ? i doubt ……. eventhough people may initially register multiple accounts, they may be only operating their actual email ids over the period of time. Also they are tracking multiple accounts from same IP and goes through a manual approval process if they found multiple registrations….i tried myself but they caught me…he he he.. which is a good thing…they will be able to stop the multiple registrations on a certain level.. remember there can be 10-20% error in any list…. when yahoo or gmail say they have xxx Million users, is that mean they have xxx Million unique users ? never…, i have 3 yahoo email ids… so nothing big about it….

The key difference to the advertiser which i understand from their RupeeMail for Advertiser page is that, advertiser only pay for the opened mails, that i guess, a decent deal…..over the time all these multiple accounts will fade out…..

by the way….i got a good deal to kerala by http://www.travelgoogy.com through RupeeMail and i passed it to one of my friend who was looking for a holiday to kerala… it was a good deal….. so i can see good values coming out from this…..Also i heard that one of my friend’s friend got his first cheque from RupeeMail… so i guess this guys are really doing serious business…..

      Good job….

It is not possible to to teach rupeemail by creating many mail accounts because you cannot claim your cheque with same name but different Mail IDs.

    29. Shubham says:

Well, the concept of paid to read advertisements on your cellphone has matured a lot in India. And like any entrance exam for the IITs and IIMs there is a mad rush for the market. There are over 25 sites promising to pay you for receiving ads as sms.Which one to chose remains the question for most users?

http://millions.awarspace.com is a website i stumbled upon very recently. It has some significant research in this area and provides reviews and tips n tricks for only the websites which ACTUALLY pay the users and have some documentary proof of the same. Those who are interested can check it out and register for various programs for free from this website

i have rupee mail account but i dont receive any paid mails.

    33. Swapan Dhar says:

Some of you say that you did not receive any ads from Rupee Mail. Well, for your information, you might not get even one in your first month. If you are lucky, you might get a couple and most probably they would be worth 25 paise or 50 paise only. Not much is it? Don’t worry, if you have gone through their website, it says that if you refer your friends, you will get Rs 2 per friends. I was confused as you are in the beginning till an unknown person told me the secret via email. Thanks to him, I have about Rs 55 in my account. My target is Rs 200. Once I have that, I will cash out. I have about a thousand email IDs with me and I have sent invitation emails to all of them, unfortunately, Rs 2 per person does not appeal to them. But I am not giving up. So what are you waiting for, log in to your Rupeemail account, click the invite button and start inviting others. If you have any problems, I can help you out.

    34. swetha says:

i have rupee mail account but i dont receive any paid mails

      • Swapan Dhar says:

Hi Swetha, After you registered with Rupee Mail, you must have received an email from them to verify your account. If you have not done it, please check your email in inbox or spam folder and click the verification link. As I said earlier, you might not receive paid ads immediately. Be patient you will get them soon. In the meantime please log in to your account and click the invite link and send the invitation link to all your friends and people you know. I think you already know that you earn Rs 2 per person you refer. I have about Rs 60 in my account now, Not much, is it? There are others who are doing better. Just be patient.
