@Abhishek

Totally agree with you. I'm just pitting the models against one another. Ultimately, a combination of some/all may work. The point remains that relying only on advertising as a model may not really work though. And glad to see that you guys are already trying 4 out of these. Could you point me to your site?

Very well put in terms of a model but you pick out transaction as the best model but if you are able to build a community of users the best model is to get as many of these models working with your users this produces multiple revenue streams something which is working very well for our startup . Infact we are targeting 4 out of these 5 models simultaneously and will do the 5th once we scale up

@Keshava... good point but I would still say that this is only monetizing the interaction since the cut for the website is irrespective of the volume of transaction that happens after the two parties connect. ODesk is the best example for a company that monetizes this volume of trnasaction as well. Of course, in the case of B2B ecommerce, it is very difficult to track the transaction since that happens in a series of negotiations offline. Alibaba is trying out new revenue models experimentally in China to increase monetization per transaction and makes for an interesting read.

In a B2B e-commerce website. Posting a buy/sell request by a user is a transaction and it can be charged. Apart from both of them deriving value by gaining access to the market place, it will reduce the amount of spam benefiting the whole community. By charging we separate the window shoppers from real shoppers. crowdspring.com works on this model for crowdsourcing graphic design.
