Its all about eyeballs and data!! Social networks are a gold mine for user data. Over time, technologies  will be built to get a better behavioral profile of the user, and hence get better at predicting user intent. 

We are not there yet, But i think we are not far off from the following scenario: A guy working for a HiTech company gets married; The AdNetworks start showing him ads on Cars and housing loans!!

However, something interesting is happening to these walled gardens. DataPortability, OpenSocial, FriendConnect...are  initiatives that have the potential to break the walls!!
