Opera has just released it’s market wise report on usage of mobile browser and here are a few interesting findings for India:
Around 48.9% of traffic from Indian Opera users goes to social networking sites and the top 10 sites Indians visit on their mobile phone are:
- in.m.yahoo.com
- www.peperonity.com
- gallery.mobile9.com
- www.mocospace.com
- www.160by2.com [review]
Mixed trend, right? Worldwide trend is pretty much the same, i.e.:
- Social networking is popular worldwide and is the leading source of Web traffic for mobile devices.
- Consumers desire a rich Web experience regardless of the device they use to access the Web. WAP continues to diminish as more-capable Web browsers are able to display full Web content on mobile phones.
- Nearly a quarter of all traffic is headed to content portals or search engines.
What’s your opinion on the mobile Internet trend in India? Is there a demand-supply gap?
Do we have enough capacity that can bring down the gprs price?

am surprised to see 160by2 in this list!!
its funny that worldwide people are using social networks, but none of these socionets have any revenue model
@Kode: They dont? Facebook makes about 140 million in revenues. I think the factual phrase is “they dont have a USP”.
Its all very simple. If you socialize and pay for it, its Matrimonial 2.0. If you dont, then its a socionet
vijay – FB is able to do it (thanks to their intrusive baecon strategy), but myspace and others are falling flat…rgt?
@Kode: I am still not far off to your statement “but none of these socionets have any revenue model”
I dont understand this dwelling on social networks and their revenue models anyways. There are a gazillion other services which can be argued on the same basis.
@Kode: Here is a theory:
Its all about eyeballs and data!! Social networks are a gold mine for user data. Over time, technologies will be built to get a better behavioral profile of the user, and hence get better at predicting user intent.
We are not there yet, But i think we are not far off from the following scenario: A guy working for a HiTech company gets married; The AdNetworks start showing him ads on Cars and housing loans!!
However, something interesting is happening to these walled gardens. DataPortability, OpenSocial, FriendConnect…are initiatives that have the potential to break the walls!!
