OnMobile launches OnMobile Developer Network

OnMobile has launched OnMobile Developer Network (ODN), a mobile application marketplace that attempts to connect developers, entrepreneurs, content creators, technology companies and carriers to build compeling VAS offerings.

Ozone, OnMobile’s multi-modal platform enables a product to be delivered using voice, wap, sms and mms and provides features like:

  • Telephony integration
  • Speech recognition engine (OnMobile has acquired Telisma SA, speech recognition software provider)
  • GrXML support for Indian languages
  • VoiceXML/CCXML Interpreter
  • Text to speech (TTS) engine
  • Portal Management engine and Provisioning GUI.

This is of course, a big news for Indian Mobile VAS content creators/entrepreneurs who can leverage OnMobile’s market reach and can focus on creating innovative VAS solutions.

OnMobile is currently working with few selected partners (more like a closed beta) and will open up to developers in another few months (announced in MoMo Monsoon event).

Interested companies can contact OnMobile at odn at onmobile.com.

      Hi,

Multimodal stuff is big hit, may be its future.

    2. a good news on the face of it but what are the detail /fine prints ??

is it just a tech platform thing where they offer their Technology as API to integrate in your setup or does it extend to distribution also ? can I use this ODN to get reach to all the user of telco ? or is there a clause to use Billing server of partner telco ?
if approval from telco need to be taken seprately and on case by case basis than its tricky .

this is not to say that this is not a welcome change in mindset . this type of thing is what a market leader should do .i am sure more folks will follow this

      • Hi Prashant,

Happy to see positive views on OnMobile Developer Network (ODN). Vision of ODN is to build mobile applications market place that fosters telecom VAS innovation. It connects developers, entrepreneurs, content creators, technology companies and carriers and helps them deliver a variety of cutting-edge VAS offerings to the end user.

For a developers/entrepreneurs, ODN not only supports its partners with infrastructure and technology but also work with them in developing various channels for access to market.

Currently it is in beta stage where we are working with select partners. We will be able to share more information once we formally open this program to everyone.

The birth of an “open” VAS platform. Maybe, this will go down in history as “VAS before and after OnMobile’s ODN”

It would be interesting to see how the Telcos adapt to the changing environment. I’m sure Telco’s don’t want to be just a data-pipe (Bottom of the value-chain). They have already missed the internet train.

@prasanth In the announcement, there was a mention of providing Billing API’s also.

    4. Mahesh,

For Phase 1 we are opening up APIs for Voice platform, Subscription & Billing

I think this is DAMN big! – I mean there are few very cool app developers and their major pain point is to acquire users.
Hope OnMobile’s dev network serves a great platform.

Any idea on the rev share part?

How can I get access to the Beta ? I was planning to buy some costly hardware, now I hope to do away with all of that

    10. Ah :-)

This was my business plan 3 years back. I was and still am really passionate about this although I dropped this idea for inaccessibility of speech recognition for indian languages. Way to go, OnMobile !

No matter how much flak OnMobile gets from the techie crowd, they are certainly doing some right things on the business front.

Two things that would take OnMobile to a completely different league:

      1. Open access – There are a lot of smart startups and individual techies out there. Ask Ribbit ! :-)

      2. Incremental revenue sharing – Instead of taking an up-front capital investment from the developers, it would do much better to have a pay-as-you-go model. Even better would be to give a free trial period of 3 months to all developers.

Hope to see OnMobile do the right thing :-)

      cheers

ODN is down. How will developers will rely on a platform which itself is down from last few hours.

Watch out this space for more analysis!

    12. Arun says:

It sucks when a company makes big announcement without testing. It leaves poor taste.

I was speaking to someone at onmobile and for them reliability seems likes an inside joke.

No matter how much onmobile tries, their preparation is short of questionable and unprofessional.
