Now that government has announced 3G Policy,handset manufacturers are gearing up to launch 3G compatible phones at affordable price. 
- Huawei Technologies is planning sell 3G entry-level phone within $80 to $100.
- LG’s KU250 3G phone is priced at $100.
- Motorola has about 3 3G models ranging from Rs 14,000 to Rs 19,000 (i.e. $350.-$475)
Will operator hold the gun?
Probably not. A start-up package could cost around Rs 299, which is roughly what consumers pay for a fixed broadband service. Unlimited downloading may require subscribers to pay Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 a month [via]
If you look at the current handset market, close to 50% is ULCH, while 15% are high-end phones (3G enabled) – essentially, the 15% subscriber based will serve as the initial adopters of the service and as VAS players/content players get into more action (i.e. more compelling content/distribution), the service can witness mass adoption.

A lot of this is function of revenue sharing between operators and VAS players – a number which is highly skewed towards the operators for now (70:30).
One thing is for sure, selling iPhone will not be a cakewalk for Apple/operators as Indian market is very different and a hyped-up (i)phone does not meet all the basic needs.

Suggestion: When doing a price comparison, it helps to keep all the prices in the same currency.
I am not sure if its such a bad deal for most of these operators. Airtel Sells Blackberries. Vodafone sells iPhones – it actually is competing head-on with each other.
I look around and see quite a bit of people with blackberries – with the Rs.1000 monthly plan for blackberry services. If the iPhone channels were to go down the same route, they’d have the money back just as good as the blackberry guys have been.
Dont see any issues there.

Blackberry has been more of a corporate service and easier to crack, but 3G? It has to be a consumer play and there is a ceiling when it comes to adoption of such service (given the current price point and awareness).
I guess this is the time for VAS players to play their cards right and bargain for a favorable rev share.

A bit of relief. Now airtel is providing option of EMI to buy iPhone (www.airtel.in/iphone3g). At least, now people who were expecting to be in range of 16-20K can think again to buy it with EMI option. What you say guys? Can we hope to get its price down in future as well?

I’m willing to buy 3G phones but there is no 3G network/services where i’m staying. So i’m waiting 3G services in my city.
I’m waiting for the Nokia 2730 Classic. With around Rs. 5300 as the expected price, it is probably the cheapest 3G phone with reasonable features in India.
Nokia e63 is also providing all the features at normal price range.

On price comparison websites nokia 5800 xm is on par with iphone 3gs and nokia n900 etc as long as you aren’t too interested in the memory size or screen size. I have been using nokia for most of my mobile life and am very tempted by the iphone 3gs if only for the speed and the application store. No apple app store has crashed my itouch yet but my nokia crashes and freezes almost everytime I use the ovi store. The amount of times I’ve lost my data is crazy. Nokia please note- 5800 is best phone around all it needs is diff os, larger screen and reliable app store. Even though I’ve lost data I still love my 5800 because you can buy3 of them sim free for 1 airtel bound iphone- too expensive- what does apple take us for? they are selling to the elite. Take my advice, go to website for apple in usa, buy a 32gb itouch for $299(rs13k) or 8gb for $199 (rs8.8k) free delivery to india and buy yourself a cheap anything will do phone for your calls. itouch will do all your wifi and e mails.

not to forget that not all 3G phones are HSDPA based. HSDPA is 3.5 g tech, and which gives 3.6mbps, while only 3G gives around 384kbps.

The iPhone is available in $50 (i.e. 2200 rs) in US with AT & T plan. I dont know why it is so expensive in India. Certainly data plan and phone would cost you something but that is the same case in India. Looks like airtel and vodafone is planning to make some 300 too 400% profit on each phone plus monthly heavy bills.
