DoT earlier instructed operators to disconnect all handsets which do not have an IMEI number and while the deadline was set for Jan 2009, operators have now started informing subscribers that services to cellphones without a valid International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number will soon be disconnected.
The decision obviously came keeping national security in mind – but operators will need to cough up extra money for upgrading infrastructure (as they need to equip networks with Equipment Identity Register (EIR) to check if calls are being made from genuine handsets).
Close to 25 million phones in India do not have IMEI number and are expected to be thrown out of the network (deadline of March 31, 2009) – this move will significantly impact the grey market.
To find out your mobile’s IMEI number, simply enter *#06# key sequence.

My handset has an imei number but airtel keeps sending me messages as invalid imei number. What could be the reason ?
It’s not the national security, nor any other thing, it attempt to ban Chinese based mobile phone. Because, they are supplying the phones at cheap price to reach ordinary man of India.
At least after a long time Indians are enjoying the features of great looking, multi feature Chinese handsets.
We must praise them as they are giving good product at cheap prices. But, it is not helping the government to get huge taxes from reputed brands so, they want to BAN this phones.
It is the pure case of egoism. “They don’t have the ability to make you happy, and they cannot see you living happy”.
What do you call the people who don’t believe in “Live and Lets Live policy”???
Are not they criminals ?
Honestly speaking they are Criminals.
You all know well that while taking the SIM cards we submit Address and ID proof. So, if somebody is making calls from that number he can be identified.
But, some government agencies are trying to make some extra bugs and trying ways to get extra taxes by cheating the people.
Like I will let you know the scenario.
Dirty companies like Nokia and other reputed companies make very expensive mobile phone. Actually, they are not expensive, they cost very very less. But, they charge you HUGE.
They do not care for common people, these companies making us FOOL and we Indians are paying huge money for the handsets.
For an average an Indian earn around Rs.100 per day (I am calculating about average common man). Leave about the people who earn more.
So, prices should be in reach of common man. At least basic items. But, Indian government is taking advantage because, nobody here to raise a voice and government is getting huge taxes on VAT and other sales taxes.
They will get as much TAXES as the price of the good.
Expensive items, high rates = Huge taxes.
Take the example of developed nations like USA. Where average earning is $100 per day and you can easily get good handset at just $100.
What do you understand from the above?
An American can enjoy great benefits with one day salary. But, compare the same with Indians.
Rs.100 per day earning and average handset will cost you more than Rs.6000
That’s 2 months salary.
Can you see the difference ????
Same skilled American can enjoy the item with 1 day salary and Indian need to work for 60 days to get the same.
Is 1=60 ????
So, what our government is doing ?
They just need money, they don’t care for citizens.
They impose heavy taxes when somebody is earning, but, they cannot give benefits to poor people who don’t have income level to meet their needs.
So, where the money is going, its been shared by people in the government agencies. They are the criminals.
Everywhere is cheating, corruption and you will find lot of Madhu Koda’s (ex chief minister of Jharkhand), he cheated the nation by taking advantage of his post.
We can say Madhu Koda is the unfortunate man of corrupted people, he got caught but, where all the money is going when Millions of Indians are suffering in the developing country. This shows that you will find another thousand and lakhs of Madhu Koda’s in the country.
You cannot catch them, because, one thief support another. They use the money power to hide their crimes.
At last one who suffers is common poor man of India.

well, the attempt is good – and the point is not that they are going against the chinese mobiles, the attmept is that they are going against the mobiles without a valid imei number. That is the point. They are not against any nationality, and if the chinese mobiles have valid imei number then it is well and good.
