News Roundup: Number Portability Delayed, SMS Based Vending Service..and more

Mobile Number Portability implementation has been delayed (again) and the new implementation date, as per DoT is December 31st.

The decision to extend the implementation date was primarily driven by the time and efforts required to customise and upgrade the existing networks for enabling operators to provide MNP service.

SMS based Vending Service from Reliance

Reliance Communications, as part of its mCommerce initiative, plans to launch an SMS-based vending service in collaboration with E-Cube, an embedded software company.

The service, once approved by RBI will be available to Reliance post-paid subscribers. To use the service, user has to send a SMS to the mobile number displayed on the LCD panel of the vending machine, whereupon the machine displays the user’s mobile number.

The user picks the item that he wants to buy (say, a Pepsi can) from the menu displayed on the LCD screen and the product drops down the chute and the price gets added to the user’s mobile bill. (source)

MTNL’s 3G Franchise Bid

We all are aware of poor numbers of MTNL and BSNL’s 3G service (3G in India – Gloomy subscription numbers from BSNL and MTNL). MTNL’s bid to revive it’s 3G business, via franchise route met with a lukewarm response.

Only Virgin and Spice mobiles have submitted the bid and Virgin is most likely to get the deal, as it has experience running 3G services in European countries (source).

    1. Ajaz Khan says:

Our corrupt system will never improve in this way, this practice is dangerous for safety and security of India and terrorist can use it for their convenience. As already we know that we do not have correct detailed data about the persons issued with the sim cards and for gaining some profit the service providers and our system drivers are putting safety of our country at stake. Shame to these fellows who just talk about patriotism and sell it for some money.
We know even after 60 years of our Independence we do not have our ID cards which will be vital to tackle terrorism, corruption and all other issues from illegal migration to safety. But who cares. Even now ID card system they passed is nobody knows when it will come in existence and what will be its faith, still nobody knows about its progress. We are working at snail pace when we are in India, But out of India everything is moving faster we should give momentum to all these issues.
