Mobile Number Portability Delayed [Again]

December 7, 2009
By manish

The great Indian telecom delay saga is on and mobile number portability which was scheduled for December 31st, 2009 cannot happen before April of 2010.

BSNL and MTNL have informed the government about the delay, owing to infrastructure upgrade challenges [ET].

Well, operators have enough reasons to delay MNP, as it will force them to improve the quality of service, in order to retain customers (given the tariff war).

More so, a recent survey conducted by AC Neilsen throws as interesting perspective

  • High spenders, postpaid subscribers and business subscribers show a greater tendency to switch if Mobile Number Portability is introduced.
  • Prepaid, low and medium spend users are not motivated to switch.
  • Postpaid subscribers have almost double the minutes of usage compared to pre-paid subscribers and the incidence of data application usage is also higher among postpaid and high spenders.[Post-paid users are most likely to switch].

The only reason why I am not trying a new operator is I don’t want to change my number. I was hoping this would happen soon :(

Is there an official announcement from TRAI??. As of now, officially it is still December 31st.
Anyways, looks like the delay is inevitable as the PSU’s will force the TRAI to delay it further.
