Urban Mobile Users in India – What do they access Internet For? [Market Report]

India, over 400 million mobile subscribers, with ~ 11-12 million new mobiles subscribers added every month to subscriber base, is one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the world. Each day, many more mobile users are getting attracted to using the various mobile VAS offered by their service providers.

Approx 9.3 million urban Indians used their mobile phones to access the Internet for quarter ending June 2009, a reach of approximately 3.3%. Number of people accessing the net via mobile phones has witnessed a 6% growth from quarter ending May 2009.

Frequency of access remains on the lower end, 48% of users (Urban India) accessed the Internet on their mobile only 1 to 3 times a month on average.

Mobile Internet – Access Reasons

Checking emails and searching for information are the two most popular reasons for accessing net over mobile phones. 2.8% of Urban Indian mobile population used the Internet over their phones to check emails while 2.5% used the net to search for information.
It has been observed, Internet access over mobile phones is still in its infancy in India, 96% of Urban Indian mobile users are not accessing net a huge untapped growth potential. While those who do access the net (over their phones) do so with the intention of staying in touch with people.

    96% of Urban Indian mobile users are not accessing the Internet and 48% of Urban India mobile users accessed the Internet on their mobile only 1-3 times a month, on average…MEANS??

    The two said statements are contradictory.

    This very good information for people who want to start business in mobile industry. I think mobile is the emerging market and it should be penetrated. As soon as touch phone picks up speed, mobile internet will grow.
