Yahoo India has launched the local search engine (public beta launch) and as before, I won’t do a review (as I work for Y!).
So, here is the link: http://local.yahoo.in and here is the plug:
If you are reviewing/blogging about y! local, please linkback and I will feature the most informative-and-candid review here.
The local search is currently available in 4 cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai.
Couple of cool features that needs mention:
- Integration with Maps
The product is very well integrated with Y! India maps, and map data has been effectively used in the local search. For e.g. if you go to business detail page (like this), you can get driving directions to the business as well- surely increases the relevancy of the product. - EssentiaList
Data is just not fun – what’s really fun is to package it in a usable format. And that’s what Essentalist is all about – a printable ready reckoner for localities.Currently, the product offers two type of essentialists for selected localities (for e.g. ‘Moving to Koramangala, Getting Married in Koramangala) and the idea can be easily expanded to several other contexts (and cities).
Give Y! Local search a spin and do share your comments.

very neat – not like the typical yahoo product…
tried cpl of searches – the relevant results are showing up in the first 3 results set..so far so good!!
Now this is the kind of local search india really needs. the ‘Moving to Koramangala, Getting Married in Koramangala’ idea is kinda cool and very user friendly.
Disclaimer : I still love yahoo, yes they didn’t’ invite me yet fro fire eagle and search monkey, but again!
started using Local Yahoo, pretty nice UI and with less contents the idea of getting married and moving in stuffs are good. now being a techie my only reason was to verify the service if its foolproof
Comments section fro reviewing a listing supports HTML tags and its easy to add some iframe or a JS tags to manipulate and structure the data contents.
I have screenshots, but its not intentional, probably folks @ yahoo could solve this in no time
I have tried to use a iframe and referring google, by making use of Javascript, you could also redirect pages and you could imagine doing lot of stuff….very spooky
interesting product – much needed for yahoo to fill the gap.
Well Narain
Its only be very normal, i said HTML tags shouldn’t’ be allowed, as i said, have no intention to do so……last week when i saw Slideshare was down due to DOS attack from Chinese and it was down for 2-3 days with utilizing there bandwidth
Now if Yahoo can commit such, its not fair, i am sure its just a PHP validation to be done, but an awareness factor, nothing to prove here!
Yahoo local is most soughted in US and now with India entry they would be more powerful in local space, but only time would say that.
sri : good find, yes Yahoo has had its own problem and with use of YUI also, people say it lacks basic criteria, hope Y! fixes this soon.
@sri
I took a look at the screenshot that you’d put. i tried a couple of these myself. but only found that the review showed up with the html characters. It didn’t show up the screenshot like how you’ve shown it. I think they have systems in place to prevent such html injection.
You’re getting to see it that way probably because you have firebug in your browser.

I think this is really stupid and funny that people are saying “the site can be easily hacked”..this is not the case and as sridhar (comment #8) points, its because of the firebug that the script is showing up.
So, Not-so-tech-bloggers, verify before you make such statements.

No credits required Ashish – for Sridhar(Sorry Sridhar). Evident that you are not a techie, but please state facts and not your emotional quotient!!
hello All
Let me clarify things, yes its becoz of Firebug it could be done, but i also accept the point, since the injection can happen through Javascript, it could turn ugly any point of time.
The basic reason being, you can’t have HTML tags in comments, since it can always have a overriding function and can cause multiple problems, i have quoted earlier also, it wasn’t intentional at any point of time, it was only to say this shouldn’t’ happen, there is nothing to make a news out of it!

I think Yahoo local has a long way to go..it lists only 15 cities..that too have very less content so far.. for indore we are working on a similar thing..i think Sridhar is doing the same for Bangalore with yulop..for indore we have http://www.indore360.com do let us know what you think of this site.
I would still think burrp rules the roost.
Burrp is good, but I wont classify them as local search – they are more of lifestyle search with focused category (which of course, covers ~60-70% of local searches).
And am not sure they want to position themselves as a local search player – esp. after the launch of burrp tv
Phew! Whole lot of discussion here.
Yahoo Local is interesting but I think they have a big challenge on content front. Wondering how Google Local will innovate from here.
@Ashish Jain
It’s nice to see you taking initiative for Tier II cities. Appreciate your sincere efforts.
Did see the site and really astonishing that you have replicated the LOGOS straight from Yulop Portals!!
Inspiration is good, replication I think not.
I’am part of Yulop and I think it’s a serious issue that identities are being replicated. If you require help on design aspect I will help you out. But please refrain from such plagiarism!!
In best interest of both of us.
Thanks.

My first take on yahoo local search is many times people want local information on mobile and in easiest accessible way !
However i dont say providing list on internet (non-mobile) way is bad. But many folks providing the same, review and more…. What is new ? what is catchy ? Why should i go to yahoo local search to search something ???
[Please note : i was discussing same stuff with my friend, he is trying to forcefully relate it to mobile 4 mumbai, anyway it may not relavant here ]

@raxit
Point your mobile to http://www.yulop.com you will have all the local listings, movies and events on your cell phone for Bangalore. Hope this helps
@Raxit – the game in local search is not just data per se – it’s about being relevant and building relevant services.
And being ***accessible in easiset way !*** Relavant data NOT on Mobile is of little use !
