Google introduced toll free local search service for Hyderabad in April and has now launched the service in Delhi (via).
If you are from Delhi/Hyderabad, do give this service a try (dial 1-800-41-999-999).
Google ‘s local search product does suffer from lack of depth in data, which also forced them to get into crowdsourcing for maps.
Do you think Google can take on JustDial with this service?
I’d actually expect Google to get into voice recognition and not into call center (the way they are doing currently) – focus should be on data, and that’s something which very few players have been able to crack (so far).
Or maybe, they are training their voice engine?
What’s your opinion?

same here – was expecting it to be some revolutionary voice recognition application development/implementation, after all Google has created that kind of benchmark for themselves.
This seems like no Google work – creating a call center help desk.
Although voice recognition would be a tough nut to crack especially dude to the great diversity in the accent across the nation (and even within small regions).
I’d say mScriber’s done a pretty neat job of that.
hey Goog, why don’t you eat them out for breakfast next month – you know that’s more scalable anyday
I think its a good begining even if they connect users to a call center..but this model is not sustainable in long run..Ultimatly they need to come to voice recognition technology.Otherwise be prepared for a flop show:)
It seems like backward integration for google…hope they do good
Well I am happy, whether it suits google’s stature or not. Justdial being the only company wasnt giving great and releavnt local results so we decided to pull the plug and not subscribe to their advertising program. Then started the nightmare of getting pestering call from justdial just about every week. Initially I replied politely but firmly with a NO. Then it turned to a ” please dont call me”. I tried taking help of TRAI, but of no use. Called up my operator Airtel again of no use. Finally I warned against using choicest expletives. I had to scream at the top of my lungs. They have relented so far.
I believe google will give a much better customer service, even though its not as technologically challenging as to open a call centre. Our companies are far behind when it comes to customer service.
hi
every microsoft ha sits google and now i think it is the turn of google to wait for its nemesis. My take has always been that the minute google changes and tries to do a MS stunt somebody will take their measure
I think the vision google has laid out for themselves is clear. “we are in the business of search” and if you are searching for something we can do it better then anybody else. and if voice search is what India needs, google isnt hesitating to go there.
exactly — anything related to search, and we can do it better – i believe that for google too but this model isn’t really astonishing – i mean is this scalable – i’m sure for a company with money like google it is…
Gmail, picasa, youtube, ad sense/words, search, even reader, analytics, insight amongst many were but is this innovation by any means.
The question is if you don’t do it who do we look-up to, to do some techy, hi-fi stuff on this voice recognition space?
all in all, i’m disappointed goog.
