Naukri to launch FirstNaukri..Why not focus on Career?

Naukri is launching FirstNaukri, a recruitment site for freshers offering entry level jobs.

FirstNaukri will tie-up with colleges and will enable candidates to apply for jobs/post resumes via the website (source)

Thanks to recession, the job market in general is on the downward spiral and Info Edge’s growth projection is much lower than the earlier qtr – initiatives like these are meant to capture specific markets (campus placement is one of the most affected from the US slowdown) and hopefully revive InfoEdge’s revenues.

But..

The BIG Question: Career vs. Naukri?

Naukri is heavily focused on jobs and to me, that’s one aspect of the market. The real big play is in the career space – which spans more than jobs.

I guess, InfoEdge is diluting too much in the ‘naukri’ space and might just get linkedin to capture the ‘career’ space (LinkedIn has a mn user base from India)

For instance, InfoEdge already has 4 offerings in career space: shiksha, brijj, asknaukri and of course, naukri.

So, why launch another portal? Why not integrate with Shiksha – Isnt’ first job part of one’s career decision? Or even have first job section as a microsite to naukri.com?

Moreover, where is the network building up, when you have brijj and naukri – all under different logins? Serving different intents (which are so tightly connected)?

Such launches can keep the sensex buzzing, but in the long run, creating so many brands is a challenge.

What’s your opinion?

Freshers Market is already dominated by Freshersworld.com

This isn’t even worthy of news.

In a downturn, yes, companies might be a little more interested in cheap, college grads, hence, the focus on the entry level segment. But come on, how completely ridiculous is this. How many different online recruiting portals do we really need in this country. If it looks like crap and smells like crap, it’s crap!

I’m more interested in productivity as a business operating in a downturn. Recent grads might be cheap but they aren’t the most productive people in the work force. Like you said, a little bit of desperation trying to buoy their stock price with crap.

    4. Naukri alread owns Bridge an Networking site like Linked In. It is slowly moving into the career space as well.

    5. only reliable source of fresher job AFAIK is a mailing list called Chetna jobs . It used to be Rocking in my time nit sure how it is now .

I suppose, FirstNaukri’s main target would be campus recruitment just like cocubes.com. “Virtual Campus Recruitment” is one big concept which is yet to be exploited in Indian market.

I heard many a times in my discussions with all the job portal companies that they are seriously looking at this segment. We almost signed an agreement in last Oct with one of the India’s biggest internet/media company. Anyways, it didn’t workout at the last moment because of some change in management and subsequently in their strategy.

However, nobody was talking about a recruiter/employer subscription based revenue model. They are not looking at just gathering resumes and listing jobs.

All are talking about creating a great technological platform which will help companies and colleges to collaborate seamlessly, in the process, reducing the cost, time & effort in the recruitment cycle.

some other points that came up in our discussions:

(1.) Setting up a quality assessment system. Or collaborating with some existing company in terms of designing and conducting written tests.
      (2) Cutting down the training cycle of companies by providing training in the campuses to the recruits after they get selected
      (3) Setting up a channel/collaborating with a DTH provider, to broadcast employer related content. this helps in brand building as well as in educating students about industry

      Revenue Model:

      (1) selected jobseeker pays one/two months of salary.

      (2) Employer pays for branding

      (3) Employer pays for recruitment services

      (4) Employer pays for training services

      (5) Colleges pays for branding

      (6) Colleges pay for training services

      (7) Colleges pay for technology usage (pay-per-usage)

If InfoEdge can put a long term vision in this venture then I am sure the market is too huge and waiting to get captured in a big way. This can even surpass Naukri’s current revenues in 2-3 years of time.

However, if it starts to see as just another portal and doesn’t put emphasis on offline strategy, then I doubt about the propects of this venture.

Anyways, its good that some action started again in this space.
