What can be innovative about a product that kills mosquitoes? Well, most of the repellents actually repel, but not kill mosquitoes and earlier attempts to make a ‘killer’ product has failed or have remained costly enough for only retail businesses to use such products.
Mangalore based startup has built Mozziquit, a mosquito trap to attract, trap and kill the female biting mosquitoes and the product claims 100% success (has been validated by ICMR).
If you ask what’s the difference between Mozziquit and several other branded products, well most of the other products are repellents and not ‘killers’. So even if you repel them for a short time, they will multiply (300 folds) at an external breading locations and will suck you more.

Moreover, there are drawback of repellent systems – like sharp light rays and dangerous fumes which are harmful.
Mozziquit is a light weight product and claims to be active within a hurdle free radius of 160 sq. ft and consumes only 12V power (works on battery as well). What’s interesting about the product is that it’s a lifetime investment (you don’t need to refill anything) by the individual/company and the operating cost per day is as low as 25 paise.
Currently, NID is working on improving the design of the product, which is expected to be available in the next few months (expected price ~1K +).
The company has acquired patent pending status in India and has already obtained Certificate of
Registration of Design as issued by the Controller General of Patents, Designs.

I am excited about this product, and surely wanna give it a try.
I am sure it is as good as it is promised. But, the pricing of Rs 1000 (which is roughly 25x of normal liquidators) is sure going to be a tough nut.
CFLs cost some 7x and consume 80% less electricity, yet they have hardly replaced the regular bulbs.
It’s not about replacements..they can license technologies to good-nights of the world…
well shashi, you didn’t think about Dr’s bill when it comes to using those ‘fumes’ based (be it solid or liquid) repellents. long term usage of those traditional repellents are not suggested by doctors.

Heard that GVFL (Gujarat Venture Finance Limited) is planning to back this company. Looks like they have signed a term sheet with them.
This seems to be a sure winner as mosquitoes repellents are becoming ineffective and harmful. Do we know when will it be in the market ? I am ready to pay the price if it works.

Killer + works on battery -> surely an Indian product(for and by indians great).
Basically this product is a copy / modification of Dynatrap insect eliminator innovated by two Koreans.

But in original Dynatrap the UV was exposed which has been recessed (or shielded) in this unit. Also a heating wire has been added to sort of burn the mosquitoes. Both are cosmetic changes. (UV-A need not be shielded and the original Dynatrap also kills mosquitoes by trapping them and dehydrating them. In fact exposed UV-A would probably make Dynatrap far more effective than this unit. Only comparative performance will tell.)
