ISRO Launches Bhuvan, Google Earth has a stiff competition

August 12, 2009
By sinha

And finally the day has arrived. We have covered ISRO’s Bhuvan development right from the day it was announced and after ~4-5 months of delay, ISRO has finally launched Bhuvan.isro bhuvan

“Bhuvan, an ambitious project of ISRO was started to take Indian images and thematic information in multiple spatial resolutions to people through a web portal through easy access to information on basic natural resources in the geospatial domain. Bhuvan  showcases  Indian images by the superimposition  of IRS satellite imageries on 3D globe. The degree of resolution showcased is based on the points of interest and popularity, but most of the Indian terrain is covered upto at least 5.8 meters of resolution with the least spatial resolution being 55 meters from AWifs Sensor.

Bhuvan Features

  • Visualise 2D and 3D image data along with rich thematic information on Soil, wasteland, water resources etc.
  • Fly to locations ( Flies from the current location directly to the selected location)
  • Heads-Up Display ( HUD) naviation controls ( Tilt slider, north indicator, opacity, compass ring, zoom slider)
  • Navigation using the 3D view Pop-up menu (Fly-in, Fly out, jump in, jump around, view point)
  • 3D Fly through (3D view to fly to locations, objects in the terrain, and navigate freely using the mouse or keyboard)

  • Drawing 2D objects (Text labels, polylines, polygons, rectangles, 2D arrows, circles, ellipse)
  • Drawing 3D Objects (placing of expressive 3D models, 3D polygons, boxes)
  • Snapshot creation (copies the 3D view to a floating window and allows to save to a external file)
  • Measurement tools (Horizontal distance, aerial distance, vertical distance, measure area)
  • Shadow Analysis (it sets the sun position based on the given time creating shadows and effects the lighting on the terrain)

How to Download & Install Bhuvan?

Register here. Download the Bhuvan plugin from here (its actually Skyline’s terraexplorer plugin) and Microsoft’s DirectX.

In order to install the plugin, you need to have the administrator privilege in your machine. The product works only in IE and is quite buggy to start with [View bhuvan pictures and screenshots]

All said and done, the product is very well timed – we are close to celebrate India’s independence day and Bhuvan is one crown that ISRO will be known for in the coming years.

What’s your opinion?

      that’s cool
but, the logo looks too wierd… and seems programmers themselves created it. Atleast, they should hire a good designer, for advertisements and exhibitions. :(

  9. Rajib on August 13, 2009 at 9:25 am

    Hi,
Why is the beta version not available for Mac OS. Now-a-days almost all new softwares are compatible with Windows and Mac OS.

Further why does one have to register to get the application. If the purpose is to make it popular, it should be available without registration.

Third, why ask what’s the purpose. Nobody is going to say they want to use it for wrong reasons even if they intend to.

    Thanks.

    • Avijit on August 14, 2009 at 11:30 am

      Dear Rajib,

This is ‘BETA’ version hence only for Windows, and secondly the software prowess of ISRO has not reached the level that it can release both ‘win’ and ‘Mac’ they’ve not even released a version which is compatible with firefox !!

As far as purpose is concerned that’s just a formality even they know it… but they are ‘SARKARI’ at the end of the day my friend…

    • pavan on August 14, 2009 at 10:10 pm

      Hi Rajib,

Bhuvan uses .Net Framework 2.0 which can run only in Windows platform. Hence it will not be compatible with Mac or others.

    Very Hopeless Performance………………….

    • aaa on August 14, 2009 at 12:46 am

u r not fit to be an indian.. dont act too smart as if u can sit and develop.. This is fully an indigenous product which u r to be proud off.. No other country except US had this chance of seeing the whole globe with there countries made product.. be ashamed of u r self…

      • AAA responder on August 14, 2009 at 1:46 am

Not fit to be Indian? Fully indigenous? You must have facts before you can write this rubbish. There is nothing fully indigenous about Bhuvan just like there is nothing Indigenous about Tata Nano. Bhuvan has been made on computers made from western technology, by engineers who have studied from western universities, based on funds from western countries and are now trying to show that they are Indian? This is total hypocricy. The only thing Indian about it, is hypocricy.

        • Hussain on August 14, 2009 at 9:41 am

Mr.AAA no matter where they studied or where the technology came from. but they made India proud. we must appreciate somebody new innovation. i`m a sri lankan but I also proud my neighbor country’s great achievement. good luck INDIA…………

        • Uday Kiran on August 14, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Hello mister AAAResponder. Do you how many of our engineers are working abroad for their product developments. Nobody does nothing for free . Do you think if western countries gave funds that was free , they expect something in return.Try to be proud of what you are.Don’t always compare yourself to western countries. We have our own identity.

        • Prakash on August 14, 2009 at 11:35 pm

I am proud to be an India. There is nothing that you can make 100 % indigenous, atleast, in today’s world. May be due to many reasons, but we have to borrow technologies from abroad, occassionaly. But that does not mean that we are dependent on them. Remember nobody gives you anything unless you are worth something. USA did obstruct the sale of super-computers to India, even when we were ready to pay. But now they are offering us the nuclear technology not out of pity of favour but sheerly because, if they don’t, it is they who will be the loser in the long run. This has been proved in the past by several incidents also by other countries. So one must be proud of his country. When a neighbour like a Sri Lankan [Mr. Hussain ] can appreciate our efforts, it seems you are not an Indian for sure. I dont say any more. Let me see how you Mr. AAA read between the lines

        • chetan on August 16, 2009 at 7:44 pm

of course not fit to be an indian

        • Ashok on August 17, 2009 at 5:24 pm

agreed with aaa, AAA remember that 80% engineers abroad are indian, 1st computer abroad was made by NRI, leaving this aside, u shud know there are indian companies producing computers, how do u know they made Bhuwan on foreign computer? hahahaha …. but i suggest aaa to be kool… kisi ke chillane se ISRO thode hi rukega?

          • Ashok on August 17, 2009 at 5:28 pm

comments from AAA confusing me if he is 100 % ? never heard a name as AAA in india hahaha

        • John Lalu on August 17, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Are suno to….sasura ‘AAA’ jo kahat hai bahut sahi hai. Hum hindustani bahut uchal rahe hai lekin hamri buniyad (base) — technology ki bahut weak hai.

So, yeh bhuvan, phuvan chotdo aur bhaiswa (buffelo) ko char khilo….

        • ajit on August 18, 2009 at 10:49 pm

hi, dear friend. let me congratulate you for being an indian who can air whatever shit he thinks!!! secondly whats the use of reinventing the wheel again? thirdly these westerners are blissfully mis guided about entire number system and pl tell me the entire binary/ digital machine language which works on a ZERO was invwnted by some foolish non wesern univrsity trained indian. lastly definitly the westerners have used indians like you and me who are happy fighting each other and taken out the scientific wealth out of our scriptures and ancient documents. can you talk of sme great medical inventions (sushrut and charvak), great matematicians( banbhatta, aryabhattaetc) . when these westerners were roaming in jungles my friend we indians wre discovering astronomical nuances. theres lot it cant be put to few words and sentences and paras. thanks buddy enjoy your free life in GREAT INDIA.

        • Neeraj on August 22, 2009 at 7:15 pm

My friend when “0 – ZERO” was invented by Indian scientist Aryabhatta which is the base of computer, how can you give the credit to western world.

        • jai bharat on August 29, 2009 at 12:35 am

hey AAA i’m not sure whether bhuvan is completely indigenous, but i’m very sure u r not indigenous because ur father must hav eaten something or used something made of western countries, before sleeping with ur mom, which produced multigenous product like u, and must think before wat u r writing… u BAST______…

        • Prashanth on August 31, 2009 at 11:57 am

Mr. AAA where are you from? first know about india and indians. Then talk. You are talking about computers. computers are mainly works on the basis of mathematics. Who gave this basics you know ? not western contry people what you are proud off. That is indians only. Indains not only given ZERO. trignometry is from india only. that to aryabhata found it. i am told only two thing. No need to read about all others of indians. Just know what aryabhata did. that itself is enough for you to change your mind about india and indians. Raj only said about performance. but you are going in some other way.

  14. francis on August 13, 2009 at 10:03 am

    The facts: Who’s silverline?
This app uses a foreign engine. So the kodo’s as ususual have to go elsewhere. I wonder what it cost to import it !

    Where’s the Indian software component?
If the actual expertise is from abroad what precisely have we acheived?
If the app is foreign at least the imagery could be the best?
Can the imagery be compared with digital globe? with world view? with
    geoeye?

Why tell the media it’s far ahead before even testing it.
It’s still in it’s infancy, depends on foreig software, and has
little Indian contribution .. we must wake up and build such stuff
ourselves. Surely a nation of 1 billion can build something exotic.

    • Dan on August 14, 2009 at 10:06 am

The satellite that sends back pics of the greatest resolution till date is INDIAN.

Software that shows the data is the easiest part of this whole solution.

      Got it Mr. Francis?

    • BOBBY on August 15, 2009 at 2:02 pm

      Hello Mr. Francis.

Whatever u have written about hiring services from the webstern country, pls note that even u did not come in this world without ur mothers ability to concieve……do u also think that u were born without ur mother…..

Another fact, you know there are so many contries in the world those import food items from india. so what will u say about them , r they not able to produce food in their country. You should see the other side of the coin also , we are always dependant on each other because we are social animals and can not live on our own with the limited resources….. You must have heard of indian government has been given contract by Maldives to protect it.

Is it the great achievement. It was as great achievment as it was when India tested nuclear bomb.

Congratulations only because this was the first attempt to create any such thing. Otherwise, it pure crap! Not sure whether to call it Bhuvan, Skyline, or TerraExplorer. Very complicated for a first timer or rather “user-unfriendly”. Terribly slow, and eventually saw nothing more than a totally blurred image. If you wish to blame it on my 256kbps internet speed, is every common Indian supposed to upgrade to higher internet speed package just to be able to get a clear view of Bhuvan? How user-friendly is that? Besides, at it’s Skyline > TerraExplorer > Main page the first 2 options we see are USA and France! So we can say Made in India, Made by Indians, for anyone but Indians. And to top it all, this is introduced just two days prior to Indian Independence Day. Hope they work on it properly and make it much easier and relevant for our own native people first and then for rest of the world. Wish your team all the best and looking forward to an improved version. Thanks for experimenting with something new though. Best of luck, ISRO Team.

  49. AA on August 14, 2009 at 9:16 am

    Hi All,

Whatever it is, it is a first attempt by India and I must appreciate ISRO. I did read many comments above and the main debate is whether it is indigenous or not. We don’t know the right answer and we should not try to know this because Google has already introduced long back this type of service. Another thing, it is just a software development by just collecting information about map, that’s it. this is not any Rocket science , so guys dont be tooo much proud of this. For your kind information India still does not have its own navigation system. USA, CANADA, EUROPE, CHINA, JAPAN, RUSSIA all has it, some uses only for defense purposes and some of them used for both defense and civil use. I dont remember what is completely indigenous in india. Practically speaking nothing. The whole Indian defense is dependent on other countries. They buy everything and for show purpose they make some of them in their land. Guys be practical…don’t get too much emotional. They even cant make an Aircraft Engine. At least china makes its own. Good lick guys with your own “Bhuvan”…

  50. threedstar on August 14, 2009 at 9:37 am

    Hi,
Its a good attempt by ISRO.But they have to take a professional approach in developing a well designed and userfriendly website. If you got to their website you will be desperate because site is slow, links not working..etc.they have to take care of that also…

  51. Razaul Hassan on August 14, 2009 at 9:46 am

Its a great news, my heartiest wishes to Team ISRO.

A big Propaganda and Hype before Independence Day even with a low quality product. If they are soo good, why don’t they make their own Fighter Planes and Aircraft carrier instead of buying from Russia, USA, France, Israel etc. That would be much more appreciated by Indian instead of showing this crap which does not work properly. I believe they don’t have many good software professionals working there in ISRO. All Good people are in USA. My request to ISRO, DRDO etc, please develop your R&D sectors instead of show off. Try to stop buying ready made stuffs and build in your own labs. You can fool 80% Indians but not like people who works in Foreign Labs and knows the reality. If you are reading this then believe me in India, there is no fruitful research and development going on. They just waste money and dumb up files. They even cant make a better software better than Google Earth. This is a real shame!!!

      • vp on August 14, 2009 at 11:17 am

to Mr Ajay, i think you have no %$$#ing clue of where and how softwares are made, i m in software since many yrs and i know how and where softwares are made, most of the companies in world gets their softwares made in india, although must say google is smartest on the street but this concept of one softeare is made in one country is gone out of the door long back, companies have their developmment offices everywhere, regarding fighter jets etc, there are lot of challanges that india faces that other countries that you mentioned has no clue, i think when something good or attempt of making good is done, we should be looking at positives than who did what and where its done.
I would say well done india.

      • Rajesh on August 14, 2009 at 12:13 pm

if you have such a knowledge first you have to remember that at first google earth was also having a lot of problems and bugs in it. Google earth also has its initial stage if you are on top does not mean that you are not born at the top.you have climbed to the top. pls remeber this before you comment. No one is trying to fool you guys. no need for that too……

      • bobby on August 14, 2009 at 1:11 pm

i don’t know who the hell r u mr ajay, and whats wrong with all u guys who want india or ISRO to make Fighter Planes and Aircraft carrier……i too want them to do that, but there r some problems u should understand. It is not the incapability of ISRO or DRDO scientist that is stopping them from doing it. But the incapabilities of the central government to provide funds for the project. And also those people including politicians who think that spending money on such things is waste, when the nation have so many problems with. And also the time factor… no technology has been developed in a period of a night. And we don’t have time because Pakistan and china are getting closer by each passing day. And u people sit back in ur home in front of ur pc and write all the non scene u want. I don’t understand why u guys r soo harsh to them. u give them time and money they will deliver. know stop criticizing them and start appreciating their work.

        • Ajay on August 14, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Look guys, I did not want to discourage anybody. I know they did something and I must appreciate their effort. I also know about the F******g Indian politics and those F*****g politicians. Because of that the complete system has become paralyzed. Somebody asked who the hell I am, for your kind information I was very closely related to some of the Indian defense Labs (not mentioning names for security reasons). I have seen the politics and work environment there. They maintained typical government job style, no competition and a lot of politics inside. Well, u guys also know these so i don’t need to explain u. India has soo many software professional but almost all of them works for USA…Can you justify this? Whats the callous Govt is doing? People like me working in other countries. Do you think we did it intentionally??? No dear, they wanted me to keep watching as a layman, do nothing, follow them, if you try to do something good…they will not promote u..because of lobbying and internal politics..No competition at all dear. Anyway, I don’t wanna discuss my story here. Yes, they have to make their own Aircraft carrier and Fighter Planes….They have to, I am saying this because I love India. It is not that Govt don’t spend money, Do you have any idea how much of them got wasted??? Do you know what is the problem there, they can not keep students from best schools over there (IIT’s). Every nation faces challenge but it is the people who will overcome the challenges and rebuild their nation. How many years our nation will be dependent on others. Look at china dear, with so many problems, they have shown development. Do you have any idea how much develop they are???? way better than India….look i am not criticizing, just making an example. So don’t take it personally, take it rationally and think wisely. Thank you guys for reading this and God Luck with everything!!!

Dont just be like a frog inside a well…we Indian, we made it, great blah blah!!!Let me know what did ISRO do new here. It is just a copy/past of Google earth with a lower version after many years. If they do something new what none has ever done or thought about then i will salute them. With millions of software engineer and the result is zero, producing crap. I doubt how many good software engineers work for India, all good people are working for American companies. Just a shit!!!!

There are other countries where you will get more freedom than you are getting in India (if you are there). I can feel the difference. Hi………..
This is really a shame on ISRO and other R & D organizations of INDIA. By spending our tax money in creating this kind of craps.
Let me tell you guys who support and give hype to this crap. This is a third class product made by ISRO India. We just cant see any thing in the map. Its a shit. Like all other R & D products this is also a crap.
    Like……..
    1) LCA — more than 2 decades and its not accepted by IAF itself, i accept there are some issues, but even after that its incapable metal crap. They are now going to design Mark 2.
    2) GTRE GTX-35VS Kaveri…….. i was six year old kid when it was started in 1986, now i am nearly 29 years old. Hahahaha……. its a crap. It just cant make any fighter fly.
    3) Arjun MBT…… great crap of India. Took more than 40 years……. hahaha to develop a just a battle tank. Crap…..
    4) Insas Assault Rifle……. crap. Some times they will not fire at all. hahaha. Later they rectified it i think. without testing they will give it into the hands of our soldiers to let them die.
    5) Multi-Mode Radar for LCA…….. that is also a crap. They cant make it. still working on…… but no results.

there are lot of things to list…….

now they will work on to create on more crap that is MCA.

But i also want to appreciate for carbon-fibre composite technology….. its a success, and this licensed to Airbus, Boeing, and infosys.
All the best for all the R&D organizations of India. Please try to give good things, before testing dont release it. And put your real efforts. i heard people at GTRE sleep for hours in labs. Kick those people out. and bring some real hard working guys.
All the best……… i love my India. do some good stuffs.

u name a radar of LCA what about PSLVII ?do u know how many country today repy on our PLSV to send things up in orbit ?

be proud to be an indian.what r u doing by the way ?what is ur contribution for ur country except criticism ?

who are the peoples sleeping ? are not they our peoples ? u r announcing as if some pak ppls are eating ur tax money and sleeping.

        • mdayalvish on September 3, 2009 at 12:55 am

Mr Ajay, you says that India cannot do on it’s own. true. but it suits to the so called western countries and US too. without other country and techno savvy support it is not possible for the US to achieve the same in Space and other scientific inventions. is there any software that made in US without the support of non American? How many genuine US software engineers are working for the success of their so called Space station mission? This so called Americans are sucking our resources and our intellectual properties such as our young brains. An American worker gets more salary than a non American software engineer in US. Earlier they stolen our wealth. now we makes many a technical product whether it is a software or a product without a name and title. but the name and title will be given by the so called technology giants and they seek patent for the same and in return we gets half a square meal.

    INDIA ROCKS!!!!!

  106. devajeet on August 18, 2009 at 12:07 am

WOW Bhuvan is great…ISRO is great…INDIA is great. If anyone has a problem with BHUVAN it’s their problem. BHUVAN is still in it’s nascent stages and am sure it will become better than Google Earth in 2-3 years. Though you can’t zoom as much as GE for the time being but it is a beta version and improvements will take place slowly.

    Those who think BHUVAN=CRAP GO #@%* !!!

  107. sreeram on August 18, 2009 at 12:07 am

thanks very much for bhuvan. im very proud to be an indian

  108. francis on August 18, 2009 at 7:17 am

    The facts: Who’s silverline?
This app uses a foreign engine. So the kodo’s as ususual have to go elsewhere. I wonder what it cost to import it !
    To Dan / Bobby etc

We don’t seem to understand that the power is in the software

If the actual expertise is from abroad what precisely have we acheived?

The actual imagery with ISRO is far superior to what they are releasing

Bhuvan has been built on Skyline technology ! We should feel
humiliated .. little Indian contribution ..
wake up .. what are our software developers doing? Jai Hind

ISRO must sponsor Indian companies if they cannot build it themselves.
Anyone know what this has cost the nation? How much forex?

Chill down and let’s start working.

    • Ajay on August 18, 2009 at 10:20 am

Right u are. I think ISRO wanna get some big Govt money and for that they need to show some initiation, and this is that. It wont cost that much. Software has already made by Google (or some company worked for Google)so it is not unknown to the software industry. Yes, ISRO should use deshi companies for this. Neither they have that much manpower nor quality….I know who gets there, so i have a little idea about them. My suggestion is build up some small projects (Divide the big) and divide them in very small groups (7-12 people), fix a deadline, tell them if failed, u r out or will be demoted…see the result in 3 years dude. Until u kick-out worthless guys u cant get results. They should change the rule ” It is a govt job and nobody can do anything”……………Any suggestions???????off course from quality people..and please dont be proud again….Thanks!!!!

  109. Jat on August 18, 2009 at 5:34 pm

I agree that bhuvan is no match with google earth at least for the time being and also the ISRO should have tested it properly before going live with the software. But I do not understand these ppl who are criticizing all the indian for their attitude and work culture ( @Ajay/@Anand ). If you guys are so concerned about the Indian way of doing things.. Then come to India and change the culture here. Sitting outside and earning in $$ and then making such stupid comments here on a public portal is no solution to this.

    Congrats for the efforts ISRO.

  110. NKA on August 18, 2009 at 7:23 pm

I have not gone through the bhuwan. but one thing I am quite sure that some people have inferiority complex being an Indian. They are talking like they are supereb, very hard working and busy. But they have time to post reply again and again only to critisize the country. But they forget that a nation does not have an image separate from its citizens. Considering the limitations we have in our couuntry, I think whatever our scientists are doing, they are doing well. Nation is just like ur parents. If u dont like ur parents, you should be thrown out of the home. Being a professional myself (CA), I strongly believe that we have made remarkable progress in last few decades. I am an Indian and proud to be an Indian. Sentiments are not our weakness but our strength and identity as indian. Bye n tk care..

  111. Shalini on August 19, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Hello ISRO & My dear Friends

Congratulations for doing such a great job ….. I havent used this software yet but while installing I came to read all your comments….. One thing is common whether its Mr. Ajay or some Mr.XYZ who are discussing Goods and Bads of Country.
First thing is, its up to US that what we are perceiving from our country. Today we talk about our country getting Under developed , or poor or blah blah……..
But have we ever gave any thought that what we are doing for our country … Getting a good job, earning 40-50k , one Honda City and a Life partner,,,,,, thats the only motto we have in our l;ife ….. before blaming to our country just look in yourself that what we r contributing ……

I just dont want to discuss about it …just its my opinion ….. but I believe that there are some people who care for our country … and ISRO is a group of those such “some” people……

and guys no hard feelings ……… just chill ………

  112. dilip on August 19, 2009 at 7:43 pm

hw its work pl tell me someone in delails

  115. Y. R. Mody on August 20, 2009 at 5:18 pm

I like the interface but honestly it is far off from being a world beater. Even after delay and so much of hype I am far from happy with what I see

11 MB of plugin that works only on IE and pathetic speeds of download.
Application crashes more times than it works. The search results are all lost.

Looks like something outsourced to Microsoft. Its kind of proving the theory that our IT pro’s are only good for labour outsourcing rather than skills

I hope things get better in future. I think they should hire some top quality consultants for UI, hardware setup and infra and communication. Wishing ISRO and Bhuvan good luck

Pathetic….ISRO can never beat google with such a lame interface and slow speed. Stop praising unnecessarily.

  211. sorena on November 4, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Bhuvan is shit as compared to Google Earth.
    Bhuvan doesn’t work at all.
Let alone a town, I can’t see a huge city like Aligarh through Bhuvan.
It is as useless as any other Govt project in India.
    It is such a shame.

  212. ssbhatti on November 5, 2009 at 12:24 am

I read the hype about Bhuvan being able to zoom to 10 m versus Google’s 100m. I was very happy and “proud to be an Indian”.
I downloaded it and found that Bhuvan does not even give images that are a fifth as detailed as the free google version, besides hanging at the slightest excuse.
Now I’m disappointed and a bit ashamed that an Indian Governmental organization would stoop to misrepresentation to try and get accolades, which judging by the majority of comments on this site they seemed to have succeeded in getting. Most of the people giving them accolades have probably not tried out the plugin. I doubt anybody could praise ISRO without choking after actually trying the product. And as for those who think ISRO should be commended for just trying, I would say that we should stop being satisfied with substandard products.

    • Devang on February 25, 2010 at 12:35 am

plz dont waste your time as it is SARAKARI,run by not quality officers but by quantity people who have passed their exams only with minimum passing marks.cant u see this in all sarakari kacheri ? v should not in race with china but with Bangladesh,Ethiopia,Sudan only then v will win.just because of illiterate sarakari baabus. v have 3 or 4 th gear & sarakari baabus have only breaks+reverse gear.,..

  233. Rajath on February 18, 2010 at 7:53 pm

    Hi,
Great software. But, I think our satellites are capable of a better resolution. Would have been excellent if the resolution enabled street level viewing at least for prominent cities in India.
