23% Failure Rate for IRCTC Transactions in Jan 2010
IRCTC has clocked a total of 6547581 number of successful transactions in the month of January 2010.
In total, there were 77% successful transactions across all the payment categories.
As far as total transactions are concerned, 23% is a huge failure rate and questions the efficiency of payment gateways.
- 73% success rate for credit/debit cards, 71% success rate for Net Banking, while Cash Cards drive the maximum ratio – 82%.
- Interesting to note that debit cards/net banking ruled the transactions (39.7%), followed by Credit cards (26.9%) and Cash Cards (13.1%)
- Among the cash cards, Itz Cash cards constituted 76% of the transactions, followed by I Cash and Done card.

If IRCTC has 77% success rate, imagine what ecommerce startups go through.

IRCTC success rate is low because the IRCTC website misbehaves. Very often money will be deducted but IRCTC fails to register that fact, and later on it is refunded – this is where the failure is happening.
by the way where did you get this data?
The failure rate is more observed during the start of the day at 8 am. Especially after the Tatkal scheme has been squeezed to 2 days (from 5 days) before the travel date.
The load on the server, the number of requests processed per second being the main contributors add to the failure rate. In general, the way the merchants server speaks to the payment gateway is largely affected by the above said factors besides host of other factors.
Payment Gateway failure on IRCTC is not to question the ability of the PG infrastructure in the country, but many other aspects that have been overlooked.
> Issuing a credit card or debit cart that works in offline mode and acceptances of same on payment gateways are two different things. The assumption that have a credit card means it will work for online payments is not valid. The audience here may not agree to this as we hold the known – Citi, HDFC, ICICI cards etc.
> Many banks (local, state & national banks) are yet to sign up for 3d authentication; lot many even for provisioning online transactions.
> Having a credit card does not mean it will work on any payment gateways available in India. While the last time I visited on IRCTC website – it offers customer multiple payment gateway options. Unfortunately a normal consumer will not know if his credit card is supported on the gateway he or she has chosen.
> Post 3D secure implementation, the amount of server routes it takes to validate and authenticate any transaction have doubled. Knowing the poor internet connectivity in tier 2 cities and broadband penetration in this country…..
> Little has been done in India to educate credit/debit card holders or netbanking users on how to use the same for online transactions. Issuing banks need to take proactive steps on this.
Knowing such issues, 77% approval rate is a achievement
Yeah achieving 60kmph on a bullock cart is definitely an achievement.
E-commerce is picking up at a great rate…Cash cards definitely seem to be the new big players at 82%..especially ItzCash with a considerable 76% share… Are they really that good for transactions?
Yes they are much more simpler to acquire & use than credit/debit cards added to that cards like ItzCash are also extremely safe. And the best part is that it can be used for a whole range of online transactions like Shopping, Travel bookings, Insurance, Utility Bill Payments to Mobile Top-ups..they make life a lot simpler
One of the reasons of high failures could be the tatkal booking. Their servers go on heavy load when people try tatkal booking and lots of bookings get refunded at that time.
Hey do u require any personal documents like Pan card or KYC to get an ItzCash card? Right now i can’t make any online bookings as I do not have a credit card because my documents are not in place yet
It would be cool if some non-travel eCommerce sites provided their perspective on unsuccessful payment attempts to fuel this discussion
Hi Upasani,
Online shopping sites in India see a success rate of about 60-65%. But its a small share of the overall ecommerce market.
Overall e-commerce (including travel and other ticket booking) does around 80%.
