KK, one of the Pluggd.in readers sent us this tip that he received this email from his KingClub (kingfisher frequent fliers) subscription.

So, while there has been no other promotions of iPad in India, maybe Kingfisher will promote this offer to Kingclub members.

After all, Kingfisher Calendar was launched on iPhone only [and no other print form]

[Thanks KK for the tip.]

Meanwhile, enjoy the review of iPad

I am a techie…I own a Nokia smartphone, own a Windows and a Linux laptop, use a Mac at work, own an iPod, tons of software, just bought the Infibeam Pi reader, and own loads of other gadgets. In India, a 3G-free land, and without proper wireless internet connections freely available, no content providers to speak of, and the iPad’s stunning lack of ability to download stuff onto it, I am still curious, as to how exactly it is going to do anything for us Indians. Remember, India is one of the few markets where the iPhone FAILED abysmally.

      Harish.

      • Rajiv says:

Harish, Actually I am looking forward to the device as an in-home utility. I have broadband in Hyderabad with a wifi network set up in our house. To answer your question, I would imagine that I am one of the target customers for the Indian market. I think the iPhone failed here because it was overpriced, and did not interface well with the cell networks here. However, the iPad is not a phone. I think Indian users will be able to make great use of it in the home and office as long as there is a reliable wifi connection. Just a thought. Now if we could just get the Indian government to reduce the import tariff.

        Rajiv

      • MSK says:

I agree with Rajiv, that the Iphone did not have the right environment for success in India namely because of the technological hurdle but to add to that , also because >50% of the users in India still use the phone not as a smart device for internet connection but as a common utility for basic calls and sms service.
But with 3G auction on the cards and big International players like Qualcomm entering the fray for broadband wireless auction(http://bit.ly/bwOm6l), things might change.

      • Bcn says:

MR harish.. these things are there with many school students nowdays,,, ur just a gadget freak literally ..not a techie man…

        hi Harsih,

I bought an ipad last week when I was in thailand and it cost me Rs:40,000=00 for a 16 GB Wifi. I am already using it on wifi at home and works superb. Unfortunately we have to wait still for the launch on 3G in india.

for whats its worth, whatever the ipad may do with its closed os and limited capability in india, it still is very much worth teh price for all the wifi models …

@Ritika: The 3G version is not supported for Indian carriers as yet.
But once it is officially launched it should be

    8. ritika says:

Thanks. so if one had to get it now, would the wifi one make sense?

    9. Juventis says:

@ Ritika: That depends upon if you have a a good wifi connectivity in your city and airports. Most of all you should see if the places where you would be using your ipad ( your office and home) has wifi access or not.
Also let me tell you that:
      1) Ipad does not support Flash.
      2) It does not support multitasking,i.e You cannot use two applications at the same time

So before buying amke sure you understand your requirements.

      • shravan says:

will it support wireless broadband like photon?

        • Arihant says:

sadly NO as of now , as ipad doesnt support 3rd party apps/ hardware as on now such as an usb modem, plus it doesnt have a usb port to begin with , so the only true way for the ipad to access internet without wifi is the 3G micro sim, which with out current TRAI geniuses at work, lack of progressive thinking, and absolute anti-technological brains sitting at positions with power, will take practically years to be properly implemented . by which time , a new ipad 2.o would be out!!

        • appleish..! says:

    13. Juventis says:

Apple does not encourage or discourage the grey market retailing of its devices.
1)Until Apple launches its, Ipad officially you would not be able to access the applications available through its i-tune stores.
2)As long as you have any wifi, you should be able to hookup the internet with your Ipad.
3)Apple has not yet launched its 3G model of Ipad, so I am assuming you have the basic wireless model of the Ipad. You will at no point of time be able to use 3G plan in India, even when the Ipad is officially launched here.
      4) And all those who have bought the Ipad, through the grey market, like one such person who is selling above, you will have to wait for the official launch of the Ipad to use the Itune store here.

Hi i am having the same problem with my ipad, i have an mtnl prepaid 3g card but i believe that you have to provide mtnl with the model number of your phone to get the internet activated. Since this is not a true mobile phone, i am confused on how to proceed. Any ideas?

            • Vikas says:

Hmmmm strange thing is that it works in Noida and in Okhla which I presume is because it latches onto the BSNL towers instead of the MTNL ones. But the MTNL Edge works in Delhi but not 3g even though it has full bars and shows the 3G sign. I really wonder what is going on with MTNL. Do they need to update the IPAD IMEI numbers into their system? If so, who does one contact for that? Thanks.

      SKS,

I again reiterate Apple as a policy does not support or discourage Grey Market for its products. It helps the products to reach the early adopters.
Any jail broken Ipads/Iphones, would not be able to access the Itunes store for downloading the application.
In short, you may be able to use it for browsing net , but you will not be able to use all its features and updates, specially those available on the Itune stores. And the real fun lies in the apps which are available for the IPad.:)

      Hope that helps,
      Thanks

I believe the basic model was already launched in April, The 3G model would take some months. Given that India’s 3G auction got completed a couple of days back, you might have to wait till Apple sign’s a contract with its Indian partners .
Buy the model from only recognized Apple product distributors to enable all the features. In India most distributors should be selling it for INR 28,000 to 29,000

thank you very much all of u for ur valuable comments …

    24. Sushant says:

Dude, passing up on an ipad for a USB port is like refusing a free transfer of cristiano Ronaldo because of his hair. There is so much more to an ipad than the lack of a USB port. If u knew apple at all, you’d know that you couldn’t dream of having a USB port on one of their devices. It goes completely against their closed loop data management system. The very fact that only iTunes gives you access to iPhones, itouch and ipad on a pc/mac tells you clearly enough that adding a USB port would be nothing less than blasphemy on apple’s part.

An ipad offers way too much to be refused for lack of a USB port. It’s fast processor, high resolution, iWork apps, book reader capabilities, are but a few of the large number of positives that it has going for it. You’re not always going to need Internet on the go. DL a few books to read while u travel, work on your presentation for work, use instapaper, watch a movie, play a game, read a monthly magazine offline, make a journal entry.. and if u really need it, there’s always BSNL and Wikihow.

The Ipad looks good but I think I will wait because Apple will come out with a new version soon. May in later this year. I hope the next version will have more memory, a webcam, and proper office suite. And of course multitasking. These are the stuff that i need for replacing my laptop with an ipad.

    31. Elsie says:

Its good, but i thought that it had in built connection!! u mean u need a wifi connection to access the net? then its barely usefull. pooh!

      • KUMAR says:

yes wifi is required when u r within the range of network like home etc. when on the move one needs 3G….. that makes it COMPLETE……as its meant to be.

    32. Suresh says:

I have the iPad 64GB with 3G. I have yet to put a replacement SIM in my iPad (It still has the original AT&Ts). For now I use it mostly for reading Wall St Journal, do cross words, read news through Pulse, play chess, and read books. I have an iPod. I don’t use it that much. But the iPad, I carry it everywhere.

A lot of content can be downloaded when at home and be read when you are being driven to work or in a plane or waiting at some place. It is the most used gadget at our home right now.

Once I put in the 3G from BSNL (you have to cut it up so that it fits into iPad, which uses micro SIM), I can also use the IPad as a navigational tool.

      • Vikas says:

Anyone managed to use the ipad with the MTNL 3G sim in Delhi? I can only make the 3G work in Noida or Okhla but not in rest of Delhi. Else only on Edge with the MTNL card.
