Telecom Roundup: Nokia: HCL Partnership, 3G Auction Updates

Nokia and HCL have announced a joint venture to to sell value added services (VAS) and entertainment content for mobile devices directly to consumers (for Nokia OVI launch).

Nokia OVI has been delayed by almost a year and while Nokia has signed some content deals, distribution is going to be a big challenge – so hopefully, an offline center where sachet priced content would be sold will help in distribution.

3G Updates

Expect more delays in the launch, as 3G vendors haven’t yet placed orders for equipments.

“Bharti and Vodafone have calculated their infrastructure requirement but have not placed any order as the companies are still waiting for the policy (auction timeframe) to be announced.
Telecom operators do not have an idea how much the spectrum will cost and probably that is one of the reasons why they are refraining from placing orders” – source

Aside, Cabinet is likely to clear 3G auction today. Post approval – DoT will announce fresh dates today.
