The recent TRAI guidelines about UCC (Unsolicited Commercial Communication) is causing more grief than doing anything useful to strengthen the regulatory framework to curb UCC.
While the motive is good, implementation sucks.
What’s the whole purpose of NDNC?
A reasonable answer would be to “cut down on spam, sms promotional marketing and such related messages”. But apparently, the regulatory body doesn’t think logically and prefers to use an axe to create ad-hoc rules. For a 2nd, 3rd tier SMS provider (e.g. ValueFirst) in India, it creates lot of problems. Their customers are forced to such ridiculous guidelines even when their customers are using the SMS delivery service for a productive application (say, banking or peer-2-peer message) wherein the end-customer (like you and me) wouldn’t mind getting such SMS.

The Irony
Irony is that operator are not forced to scrub the same NDNC list instead the dirty job has been put on the shoulder of 2nd & 3rd tier providers. So if you are using international gateways (e,g. clickatell.com) to send to a sms, enjoy! hurray..who cares for NDNC.
So if you are a spammer, don’t lose heart yet. Choose an international SMS provider (e.g. Clickatell) and none of the above rules apply. Bit expensive but worth the price 
.
For legitimate guys, things are bit messy though! What’s your opinion?

I am not sure all legit messages are by consent of the customer. Banks and credit card company’s are especially bad. As far as virtual SMS providers like Valuefirst are concerned they can very pass on the cost to their customers. I wouldn’t count on International SMS providers having a free run for long. The operators in India don’t let any spammy incoming SMS’es over their SMSC(s) until they get a cut of the profit, especially true of all ringtones, operator logos etc. being hawked over SMS spam.
We have bigger problems where the government provides for a regulatory role for the telecom operators allowing them to register ‘telecallers’ for a fee and impose a fine on them. Who is watching the watchers here ?
I wish to know
(1) Is there a site where the notification can be seen in detail? I searched in TRAI site but could not locate
(2) Now there are no numbers shown at all – only names (like TM-MyToday). If I wish to contact them, how do I? Or if someone sends me a message as “If you are interested in blah-blah service, please reply with a YES” – There is no way for me to reply with a YES. There is no number to send to. Is there an alternative?
(3) What happens to cases where an application receives an SMS and processes it (like mChek?). Should the applications be re-written?

I AM USING RELIANCE CDMA PHONE AND I REGISTERED NDNC ONE YEAR BACK.
BUT STILL EVERY DAY LOT OF CALLS COMING, EVEN AT LUNCH PERIOD NOT ABLE TO RELAX LOT OF CALLS FROM VARIOUS SEGMETNS.
WHY CANNOT THE TRAI CAN MAKE SOME STRINGENT RULES AND CALL ONLY PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT REGISTRED IN NDNC.
HOPE THE TRAI UNDERSTAND THE INCONVENIENCE OF THE SUBSCRIBER AND DO THE NEEDFUL IMMEDIATELY.
ALSO TAKE IMMEDIATE STEP TO DRASTICALLY REDUCING THE SMS COST AS IT COSE LESS THAN 1 PAISE PER DELIVRY ENYWHERE IN INDIA / WORLD.
