MoneyControl’s mobile version grabs 1 lakh users in 1 month. Lessons learnt?

MoneyControl launched “Markets on Mobile“, their wap enabled product a month back and now boasts of 1 lakh users accessing the site thru’ their mobile phones (blackberry version is out too)

This post is not about discussing the 1 lakh number (that could be a PR trick, you see!), but in my opinion, services like these are a true harbinger of days to come.

And here is why:
What’s really important in investment product is easy access to latest news, and enablers to make quick and smart decisions (on the go). Unlike the superficial products like social networks, investment products have serious money (and lives) involved.
And people are ready to spend money (GPRS download fee) to use something that helps them make smart decisions (i.e. delivers value).

And that’s where I see the next trend of mobile Internet products hitting the Indian scene : pain relievers.

Content with contextual relevance rules and maybe that’s why mobile internet user numbers are more than broadband – mobile Internet products/vas services typically fall under entertainment or pain reliever category (and both will appeal to the Indian audience).

Generic content will not have too many takers. Do you agree?

Interesting stuff. What is your take on entertainment content provided via WAP? Content not like ‘Britney shaved off her head’ but more like say a (short) review of a movie. IMO it will help the user to make a informed decision about watching a movie.

    2. Ashish says:

Yes Gaurav, in my opinion “actionable + information” contents will work in India. I don’t think Indians generally hang around www, they need information to decide on their next steps (be it about watching a movie/going to a few places/looking for a job etc)

      What do you think?

This would be great, but again when GPRS is available fro free or for lesser price, if we notice the moneycontrol, its mostly business people, traders, merchants who hook on to it, but if u need the entertainment onto mobile, you got to tackle different crowd with cheaper GPRS, but its catching up quick……

    4. Gaurav says:

      I agree Ashish.

I think for the non-GPRS users, SMS can be used to help them with getting information. The information provided to an SMS user has to be different than what you provide on web or GPRS. For example if I send “XYZ Review” (where XYZ is a restaurant, movie, shop, etc.) it would help me if I get an aggregate result like 4/5 (203 reviewers) than getting individual reviews.

    6. Hi Ashish, while I agree that products like this – given that they are inherently ‘functional’ and fulfill a customer need – are going to have a quick adoption curve, I disagree with your statement that social networks are superficial in general. While me-toos of apps such as FB and YouTube can be dismissed, vertical social networks such as social investing sites do fill a real need for people – that is to get access to opinions and research quickly from knowledgeable individuals.
