What’s the price of iPhone in India? While the initial frenzy of $199, i.e. Rs. 8,000/ has settled down, it’s time to look at the price component of iPhone in US.
Update [March 26, 2010] : Price of iPhone 3GS in India
As per iSuppli report:
- Manufacturing cost of new iPhone is $173 (excluding the cost of developing software, which will be amortized in the long run) – drop of $53 from the earlier version.
- iPhone is sold to operators for $300+ (under the new deal with AT&T, Apple no longer receives a portion of the carrier’s revenue from service subscriptions)
- The current price of $199 is the subsidized price with operators taking a hit of ~$300
US operators have all the reason to take the ~$300 hit since the inbuilt core of iPhone will help them maximize their revenue/ARPU – i.e. 3G support will help them upsell lot of data related services.
And what about iPhone’s price in India?
Given that ARPU is sliding downwards, Indian operators do not have any incentive to bring down the price of iPhone.
Vodafone and Airtel are unwilling to talk about the price they will offer the iPhone at, but Bharti Airtel CEO Manoj Kohli told TOI there is no question of subsidising the handset in India. “US operators are able to subsidise handsets because they can make up for that with their call charges. They charge rates like 25 cents a minute. In India, the charge is 1.5 to 2 cents a minute,” Kohli said. [ET]
Essentially that means iPhone could be priced somewhere around $499, i.e. 21K?
To add to the context, India is not the most important market for Apple – 50% of Indian handsets are still on ULCH (i.e. ultra low cost handsets) and 3G infrastructure is a distant reality.
If Nokia plays it”s cards well and get Internet/data activity on ULCH, they can penetrate the BoP segment and secure their market share.

arey bhai, u didnt watch the aggrement of AT & T. if u want to buy iphone mobile with the cost of $99 then u must stay with that aggrement upto 2yrs. and monthly charge is minimum $55. so , only the way is to buy the iphone without contract that means pay full fees how much they will ask. otherwise go to other mobiles.

Actually, if you are that “Touch Crazy”……. HTC Touch Diamond and Touch HD Pro or 2 will be a far better choice……. u have got that “I-am-in-the-neighborhood-call-me-anytime-u-need-help” Windows on them, far easier to use and customize, u can even put ur customized version of WinMo OS on them, and the phones never complain…… Mine’s a HTC New Gene(p3400i) and a Nokia 3600 slide, quite happy with both of them…. though looking forward to an N series soon enough,… Kudos….!!!

I own a Asus P320…that thing is sold out the moment it reaches the shops. for 12,500 Rs and 1 YW it is a very good deal. Has Windows Mobile 6.1. and features are very good compared to the apple.
thousands of applications in the web for windows mobile and well office mobile as well as pdf reader make it a nice micro pc in your pocket.
the only things i would say apple has an upper hand is the memory of 8/16GB compared to my 2GB on the asus. and …yes the widescreen of apple. and of course 3G feature…..which anyways is not yet available in india.
the question is: how much of the features do we actually use on a day to day basis? i mean looking at the current battery capacities how many movies would you be watching on the go?

ya the cost is us$199, $299…. but you can’t have that price as you seen on apple website…. even if you are in north america you can’t have that price… reason is you have to buy iphone through carrier/telecom operator i mean with the deal of the contract for couple of years with almost $50-60 per month as a data plan….to use all the feature of iphone. i asked the price of iphone in toronto in march 2009 it was canadian $600-700 without deal/contract. if you are buying iphone just for look you should try some common brands… and if you wannna buy iphone for its cool features you should first look around for the telecome provider who avail these services to you…its’ not a good idea to spend 28000INR for phone and Rs. 2000/month just to watch movies/videos or chatting in India…. actually i owned ipod touch that has everything but phone and camera as iphone for just $370…

I just received a confirmation from Vodafone that their iPhone 3G will come for no less than Rs 31,000 and Rs 36,100 for th 8GB and 16GB versons respectively. Subscribers who had pre-booked the iPhone 3G on Vodafone can pay an advance of Rs 10,000 either today or tomorrow to break the queues. Well, with a price tag like this, we ain’t sure if there will be that long a queue anywhere.

Word has it that Vodafone will be offering up Apple’s latest 8GB handset for a mind-boggling Rs 31,000 ($712), or Rs 36,100 ($830) for the 16 gigger. Why so serious high? Because neither Vodafone nor Airtel will subsidize the phone, and to add insult to injury, there’s not even a 3G highway up and running in India. People in india are not much aware of the latest technology what US people are crazy about, we need a phone with good qulity.. since I phone has got good features like Ipod, multi finger touch.. people are much satisfied with this..
So what i suggest is, give us the basic phone with Ipod and multi touch technology, we do not need the internet device.. we have got so many cyber cafe around to browse.. so if price is 12000 to 16000 deffenetly it will be a good show for Apple in india.

ya the cost is us$199, $299…. but you can’t have that price as you seen on apple website…. even if you are in north america you can’t have that price… reason is you have to buy iphone through carrier/telecom operator i mean with the deal of the contract for couple of years with almost $50-60 per month as a data plan….to use all the feature of iphone. i asked the price of iphone in toronto in march 2009 as i was in canada for the last 6 years.it was canadian $600-700 without deal/contract. i never feel that i really need it eventhough i was using 16mbps internet speed in canada. if you are buying iphone just for a look you should try some common brands… and if you wannna buy iphone for its cool features you should first look around for the telecom provider who will avail these services to you… its’ not a good idea to spend 28000INR for phone and Rs. 2000/month just to watch movies/videos or chatting in India…. actually i owned ipod touch that has everything but phone and camera as iphone for just $370…

i-phones might be better than Nokia but not conducive to indian markets. In the price of an i-phone one can but a really nice android or windows mobile even though the price has come down to 16K. Man the taxes and surcharges are damn high on i-phone!!!! makes the price almost double.
