TRAI has released its recommendations for the third phase of private FM radio broadcasting:
- TRAI recommends permitting news and current affairs on FM radio broadcasts. (currently, FM radio can broadcast news only by sharing content from All India Radio, Doordarshan, authorised TV news channels, and authorised news agencies such as UNI and PTI. No other source of news is permitted).
- TRAI has recommended that the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit be increased to 26 per cent from the current 20 per cent for FM radio broadcasting permission holders who are interested in broadcasting news, and to 49 per cent for those who do not wish to broadcast news.
- TRAI recommends that additional channels be allowed by the same broadcaster in a single city (..multiple channels in the same city will allow segmentation and generate better revenue from advertisers. Advertisers will also have the benefit of targeting specific and relevant sections of the audience due to the increase in the number of radio channels in a city.)[details]
