Telecom Roundup: 33% Teledensity, Batelco acquires 49% stake in S Tel..and more

Indian telcos added 10.81 million subscribers in the month of December taking the overall teledensity to 33%.

As of December 2008, the total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA & WLL (F)) base stood at 346.89 million.

Batelco acquires 49% stake in STel

Bahrain Telecommunications Co (Batelco), has signed an agreement to acquire 49% stake in Chennai based S Tel for $225 Million.

Batelco would partner with Millenium Private Equity, a Dubai Financial Services Authority regulated entity, to form Batelco Millenium India Company Limited to purchase shares in S Tel, which has start-up spectrum to operate in six Category ‘C’ circles, – source

Airtel’s IPTV Launch

Airtel has launched IPTV, thereby becoming the first private player to launch an IPTV service.

The customer would have to pay Rs 3999 as one time activation charges. The company has come with two price points for IPTV subscribers: Rs 999 per month for 135 channels, a broadband connection and a landline connection. The other package is for Rs 599 per month which comes bundled with 117 channels and a broadband connection. The company will offer a single bill for all these three services.
