10 mn mobile users added in September

While we are talking of recession and low spending, mobile subscriber growth continues the upward trend and India Inc added 10 million users in the month of Sept!

Of the 10 million users, GSM operators added 7.69 million new subscribers, while CDMA operators added 2.34 million new users – taking the total mobile subscriber base to 310 million.

Quick Stats (as of September 2008)

  • Total Mobile users: 310mn
  • GSM users: 233 million (75% market share)
  • Airtel leads the GSM market, RCom leads the CDMA market

The growth essentially shows the commoditized usage of mobile and how it has become a ‘must-have’ utility.

Do you think that the growth will stagnate after a certain point ?- is that point nearing soon?

The 10Mn number is staggering. Keeps me wondering if this includes people switching between operators or is it completely new mobile subscribers. If we remove this churn, what would the new subscribers numbers be?

      Thanks!

The rural market is still open…What might ail the mobile industry in coming few years is the entry of around 6-7 new players. Its very much possible that a new price war will start putting pressure on the carriers ARPU
