I did an email interview with Kalyan Manyam [co-founder of IndyaRocks] and here is our podcast.
I asked very candid questions to Kalyan
- Why another social network? Don’t we have enough of them?
- You guys are absorbing the operator cost [of sendinding SMSes]- how sustainable is it?
- What’s your comment on BigAdda’s strategy etc..
- and many more..
and am glad to say that the dude really answered them candidly.

I am not sure if all the zillion other social networking sites are really focussing on “dating” – for instance minglebox seems to be promoting itself as an online hangout for campus communities along with the usual – blogs, music, photos and videos.
At the end of the day, ‘content rules’ – people will engage with the site that offers (continues to offer) compelling content that they want to consume everyday.

I agree with you. But dont you think that many of the desi social networking sites are overloaded with features? minglebox, to me is a pure clone of myspace..what extra thought have they added to the product [apart from using Orkut to promote their site?]
Content rules – but honestly, vertical content rules better! [IMHO]
i agree – domain specific content is stickier.
coincidentally, i read about minglebox’s $7million funding today morning. with that in their kitty – they do have the bandwidth to get “authentic college communities” going. Campus life is socially busy, campuses have a persona of their own. The idea of tranferring that experience online is compelling (IMHO) – albeit borrowed from facebook. But focus and execution will ultimately decide where all that money is headed.
I agree with your views on campus life.
But that means I have no reasons to use minglebox! since I am not in any college? And that means I still use Orkut?
Somehow I don’t get a feeling that the site is really able to drive users in any direction? Probably trying to do everything [I guess the next thing is work communities]..
in short – give me a reason to switch from Orkut to minglebox?
Interesting podcast
what I liked about IndyaRocks is their social reform angle. Its easy to go after the low-hanging fruits [like minglebox/yaari etc];but making sense is a diff. biz.

I agree with above comments but somewhere campus life is also associated with dating. Girls want to talm to boys and boys with girls. The user interactions or campus life is there in orkut and people love it
The challenge is how to take them from orkut ot minglebox or youttube to indian video site or these social sites
